I think you will be happy with FM10, furthermore you can mount the lens to canon digital without any optical adapter.

I would recommend to get FM2 though if you can get your hands on it .
1/4000 mechanical shutter, no need for any batteries,..

FM2 is a great camera. The later FM2n has an aluminum shutter, while the original FM2 has a titanium shutter.

I discovered Zeiss Ikon ZM. It seems it's going to be my next cam.

I don't feel the price is too high, since it's only marginally higher than what I paid for my rebel and I'm getting a new rangefinder in M mount.

Heh, I just picked up an ELAN 7E on the cheap, and stuck a roll of Tri-X into it... We'll see where it goes. :)

Right now I'm shooting MF film (Delta 3200 and Neopan 100) on a Hasselblad 38mm superwide and RZ 67, shooting wet plate collodion on a linhof and making cyanotypes from digital negatives.

I have an AE-1 and an Elan-7.

I haven't gone to digital because of the cost of the camera.

As much as I love film for B&W, I'm getting to the point where I prefer to shoot everything in digital color then convert to B&W using specialized filters. It's not the same as B&W film but, in the end, it's more cost-effective with digital.

Gear: Kodak Brownie and homemade pin-hole cameras. Burlap sack for a bag.

I completely understand that. Film is just a pain to deal with but I like shooting it and the results I get too much to not use it anymore. I wouldnt mind a 5D when the prices come down even more, though :)

I can certainly understand your feelings on that .

But as much as I wanted to continue using my Hasselblads for wedding and event work, the lab processing and printing charges were absolutely killing me. The workflow was very cumbersome - all the negs had to be scanned - and turnaround speed suffered. I couldn't keep up with my competition and still make a profit.

Absolutely wonderful machine :D. That was my replacement for Hasselblad and I've had no regrets. I believe you can pick a 5D body up for around $2k now?

I'd love to get a 5D but they're still too pricey. Renting one occasionally might be an option but I fear I'll succumb to it's qualities and will want one, which I can't afford.

Help me out here as I've never shot film.

Aside from working in the darkroom, what is it about film that you'll like? Define the "look", whatever that means.

Folks over at LL claims that the FF canons' IQ equal or surpass the big film cameras.

So, what is it?

I don't know if I'd agree with the statement that the IQ equals or surpasses the big film cameras - I define big as 4x5, 5x7, 8x10 view/field cameras - but it is pretty good. There are some large format film users on POTN who could give a more enlightened answer in this area than myself.

A lot of this really is in the area of printing. There is so much variation in tonality and effect that you can achieve in the darkroom creating a fine art b/w print. You can certainly do a lot with a well crafted digital file and a high end inkjet printer, but it is NOT the same thing. There are groups of people who still devote their time and energy to the old arts. These people produce beautiful work; check out their site:

I also give a brief overview of their efforts in my blog:

http://pearlphoto.blogspot.com …ew-from-21st-century.html (external link)

I confess it's hard to explain the differences in mere words - you really have to see examples in a museum or at an exhibit. The prints are truly stunning.

Chauncy, what is LL?

I'd guess luminous landscape.
