I have the opportunity to chose between 2 available areas for a studio, & I am not sure which one to go with.

14'W x 28'L x 12'H
22'W x 24'L x 12'H

I will be doing portraits. Gear is in my sig.

I am thinking that the longer length might be more suitable, but is 14' wide enough? What do you think?

Thanks, Kath

Personally, I would choose the 22x24. I like the extra room that gives you in terms of flexibility (two small shooting areas) and I don't think you are going to lose much in the 4' loss.

Well having just setup up a home studio in a small, 9.5' wide area, I would go for the bigger. That way you can have more backgrounds and such setup at one time. I think you can never go wrong with a bigger room.

Mine (pictured below) is app 35' x 18' with the ceiling being just under 10', just to give you an idea of what that space looks like. My studio gear is in my gear link. It's only an amateur studio but it does the job.

Definately the 22 X 24. I have been down the road of only 14 or 15 feet width and no matter what you do, you always want to kick out the wall to get more space on the sides for lighting or light stands to hold things. Space is the way to do it for sure.

Yup. The more I think about it, the width of 22' would be more workable. I would have the space to put the backdrops & lights that I am not using in each session. I just hope that 24' is long enough. I still have about a week to decide. :D

The 24' is long enough.

24'
minus 2' for b/g support stands
minus 6' for separation of subject from background
minus 5' for camera and space for you to not have to squeeze thru to shoot
minus 2' depth for subject
leaves you with 9' camera to subject distance...with 20mm lens you see 6.7' tall x 20' wide for standing groups at that shooting distance, andall the way to 85mm lens you can shoot nice tight headshots that frame 2.3' x 1.5' portrait
