Hey folks!

I am hoping you can help with a question.

Anyone know the difference between the Sigma 28-105 f/2.8-4 DG and the Sigma 28-105 f/2.8-4 Aspherical?

I know the DG has aspherical... so what is the difference? Or is the only difference the name of the lens? (did Sigma stop using DG to describe their line?)

Been doing some research and have come up empty handed.

Thanks!
Aldwyn

DG was a moniker that Sigma stuck on almost all of there lenses in the last three years.
The lens designs are identical to previous models.

With DG models, as far as we know the only actual difference was that SIGMA improved the lens optical coatings.
Rather than simply start using the new lens coatings and be done with it, SIGMA turned it into marketing hype, added the new letters and made most of us think they were new lenses.

IMHO, it was a silly move.

Anyway the new coatings are said to be better for digital camera, and may very well be, but the differences would be extremely minimal and would only present themselves in certain lighting conditions.

Thanks!

Now that raises even more questions. :)

I currently hold a lens (in the for sale area, actually) that has "DG" on it. It's no longer sold, but Sigma is still selling the "same" lens without "DG", and instead has "Aspherical" written on the body of the lens.

Same lens, or different?

Here is what I have:

http://www.dpreview.com …/05092204sigma_28-105.asp (external link)

And the one that is the one currently selling:

Stats appear to be the same, so it makes me wonder about the glass inside, though you would think Sigma would toat the difference in advertisement.

Any clue as to if these two are the same lens with different names? And if so, why the current selling one no longer has the "DG" badge on it?

Thanks!
Aldwyn

Sigma is not listing either "version" on there website,

The link you point to is not SIGMA's advertisement but Rather simply a B&H catalog listing.

Perhaps B&H still has some old stock,.
Also I don't know if B&H would have bothered to re-label or re categorize all the "DG" lenses as different ones, or if they would have simply left it all as is and then start shipping the newer stock as it arrived.

I'm only speculating at thsi point.
