Canon SX100 IS or should I get something else?

I have been considering: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/spec...on_sx100is.asp (external link)
I would still like the camera to be slightly compact so the Canon S_ IS series may not be so practicable - although I am considering the S3 or the S5.
I've read numerous reviews that have cited the flash recycle time on the SX100 is unbearable sooo I was perhaps wondering if there were other comparable models (I know I know, sacrilegious! :X) in other brands that perhaps didn't run off of AA (rechargeable or not) batteries with the same functionalities, options, size, etc. etc. I posted this inquiry on another non-brand specific photography forum, but they don't seem as active as this one so was hoping that many some of you have knowledge of other brands . .

I already own the a520, A560, and SD1000 - but will likely ebay/craig's list two of those to fund whatever I decide upon. I like the Creative Zone functions of the A520, but haaate the flash recycle time of the A-series so I'm a little concerned with all I've read about the SX100's flash recycle time.

I have been perusing dpreview.com but I am completely clueless when it comes to other brands and models so really I've just been haphazardly clicking and backtracking my browser like an idiot. I will likely trek to Best Buy this weekend to mess around with all the seemingly comparable cameras.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi GimpyPoop

I would certainly say SX100IS , if you can bear with the slightly slower flash recycle time (due to it using 2 AA battery) AND that you have to carry spare batteries.

Technicalities aside, you have to ask yourself what kind of photos do you make ?
We have someone here who likes to take outdoor shots (me too), macro, family, indoors (an additional flash will be wise accessory to add), or just as a snap shot camera for including in one's backpack for a bit of everything.

It will also be wise to go to a nearby camera shop to touch and feel the camera that you have an eye on. One forumer was upset that about the buttons being too sensitive and akwardly designed (it was fine by me).

Lastly, a compact is not a DSLR without interchangable lens. Otherwise you will be sorely disappointed that it failed to meet with your expectaion.

Happy camera hunting / shopping.

Thanks for your response lensmen!
I think I will end up with the SX100 IS whenever I get around to it.
I typically just take snap shots with my P&S cameras. I already have a 30D to fulfill my more demanding needs - it's just quite bulky although I LOVE the IQ of the photos it produces. I certainly am not expecting the same from the SX100 or any P&S but would like to be able to manipulate more settings than afforded to me by the A560 and SD1000.
I did own the G5 (until it died on me, sigh!) and looooved it so I think I would be pleased with the SX100. That flash recycling thing is a huge issue for me though . . . hmmm . . .
I went to an electronics store this weekend and tinkered around with the SX100 the main dial does seem a bit more sensitive than what I'd expect, but I think it's a fine-looking camera! I wish there had been a SD card in the demo model so I could've tested it thoroughly, but of course there wasn't (I assume they were afraid of shoplifting).
I am also looking at: http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=KDZ712 (external link) but have read the IQ can be fairly poor on these so it seems my heart (and wallet) do truly belong to Canon. ;)
Thanks again!

Well, i am not gonna be Canon's free salesman here. But so far the SX100IS has 4/5 rating from me.

It missed out on the flash range (that tinny pop up, often casued me to +EV1 to +EV1.5 for flash) and the slow recycling time.

I don';t use the Face detection mode. Me from old school of film, this mode is really too smart for me and seems to have a mind of it's own....hahah (HAL 9000 in the making ? )

Anyway, have fun shopping for your new Canon baby.

here is a parting gift for you

Ha yes the Face Detection mode always freaks out other people when they use my Canon cameras, but it is ever so useful for me because I tend to bring out my P&S exclusively to social outings!

Yah, I'm just going to have to deal with the flash recycling since it seems from all the dozens of reviews I've read, the SX100 has the best IQ than other comparable brands. And IQ happens to matter more to me sooo I will find a way to deal!

I just need to unload my two A-series on ebay first so I don't feel so weird about then having four P&Ss and then the SX100 shall be mine!

Thanks again for the input!

Beautiful photography btw!

Thank you for the compliments.

There is a SX100IS owners list which I started earlier, hoped to welcome you to the family.
