My 40D came today. The control dial on the back was working as I went through the settings. I took a few test pictures, and now the dial won't work at all. Tried both the "On" and "Angle" positions, changing the battery, etc. Still no luck. Any suggestions? This really stinks, I guess I'll have to continue using my XTi until I get this resolved. I've got alot of pictures to take this weekend!

P.S. Bought it from Amazon. How is their return policy?

It's probably fine. Check the on/off switch. There are two on positions. The one with the --- (all the way on) enables the quick control dial. If you only turn it on one notch the dial is locked to keep you from inadvertently making changes.

If there really is a problem, Amazon is pretty good for exchanges (although it would stink to have to wait to play with the new toy!)

It doesn't work for anything. This is true for both the ON setting and the Angled Line past On setting.

And you're not on any of the Auto settings? Its only a control in a manual setting.

Or P/Av/Tv modes. If youre in the green box mode or any of the scene modes, it wont do anything.

If you press the playback button (lower left), can't you scroll through the images you've taken either? That should work in any mode, and also irrespective of the power switch setting.

The dial will not work in ANY mode ~ Green Idiot Box/P/Tv/Av/M

It will not scroll through the Menus.

It will not change White Balance / Drive Mode / FC

It will not scroll through the pictures one at a time when viewing them.

The Dial seems pretty much dead. The SET button works. Go figure.

I have tried with different lenses on and off. I have removed both batteries. I used the multi-point controller to reset all the camera settings - didn't help.

I am really disappointed. I have a basketball game on Saturday and a soccer tournament on Sunday to shoot. At least I still have my XTi.

Let me know if there are any other suggestions. FYI...I am not a newbie and I do know my way around a camera pretty well. And yes, I have read the manual a few times through (even before I ordered the camera). I am just frustrated at this point.

Have you tried reverting all settings back to default settings? Maybe the dial got remapped to do another function.

Does the Quick Control Dial work with no lens attached and the CF card removed?

A suggestion I picked up from a thread on this board and it worked for me, that was to take battery out of the camera then turn the camera switch to on. Turn the camera back off and wait about ten minutes before putting the battery back into the camera. Sounds silly (which is what the OP said too) but it worked for me, haven't had a problem since.

Remember, Stressed spelled backward is Desserts.:)
Suggestions welcome.
