A suggestion I picked up from a thread on this board and it worked for me, that was to take battery out of the camera then turn the camera switch to on. Turn the camera back off and wait about ten minutes before putting the battery back into the camera. Sounds silly (which is what the OP said too) but it worked for me, haven't had a problem since.

This sounds too flaky to me. I would prefer to have something that works when it is expected to. I would always wonder if it (or something else) was going to happen again. I have boxed it up and it is going back today. Thanks folks!

Definitely do what you're comfortable with but do keep in mind that cameras nowadays are just a computer with a lens attached. How many time have we been told by tech support to unplug the computer and hold the power on for 60 seconds to fix a problem. Also just like computers, boy is there a learning curve on these new cameras.

Good luck, I know you'll have a blast shooting with the 40D once everything is all worked out.

Suggestions welcome.

Sounds like the dial itself is faulty. I don't think any reboots or software changes are going to fix it. It's under warranty, just send it back.
