I will likely step away from the 17-55 for now and move back to a near-standard-FOV prime on a 40D. I was curious how many of you prefer the FOV of either the 24L or the 35L on a 1.6 crop body. This thread and poll are relative only to the two lenses mentioned previously.

I know that these lenses are very close in most aspects, with slightly different performance (aside fov of course). I am unsure at this time if those differences have much meaning. I have briefly used a 35L a short while ago and absolutely loved it - I have not used or handled the 24L. I would tend to think that the 35L having 8 aperture blades vs. 7 on the 24 make a difference pertaining to bokeh. does it?

Yes, I have set my zoom to 24 and 35 to try and feel out what works for me, but I honestly am still unsure at this point. I have looked through all of the archives and any threads I could find, but really most of what I see is shot with a 1.3 or FF body. If you supply some sample images, please only show us samples from a 1.6x body in this
thread.

Any reason to not consider the Sigma 30 f/1.4? I know that this poll is for the 24 f/1.4L and 35 f/1.4L, but I was just curious.

I've had it, twice actually. For whatever reason, and after two trips to Sigma, focus was hit and miss for me. I really wanted to love that lens - and I did until it proved to be unreliable for me. Up close and large subjects were no problem, but locking focus correctly on smaller subject proved to be an issue for me.

What's worse is - Sigma is 2.5 miles from my house. I was almost on a Sigma kick just because of that.

This really is a tough choice. I voted for the 35L because that's what I ended up doing and I feel like it's a great on my 40d. I use it as my walkaround and couldn't be happier.

+1 , but the 24L is pretty nice on the 5D as well. Can't wait to own one.

I would love to see more comments here. I have considered both for a 50D. I already have a 28 1.8 and think that it is pretty good for the money. I am wondering if the 24L would be much much much better than the 28 when shooting close to wide open. I know the reputation of the 28, so be gentle. I see comments about how sharp the 24L is at smaller apertures, but those are not what I am concerned about.

I recently did just that - sold the 17-55 (some regrets still...great and versatile lens) and replaced with the 24L II.

Love the 24 FOV on a crop...works well for me. Before making this decision, I looked back at most of my shots with the 17-55 and realized 24mm was a better fit for me. Just as importantly, I already had the 50L, which is my favorite lens. Didn't want to get a focal length too close to the 50, but to complement it.

Here's a couple shots with it recently...sorry I have posted these before I think, but just haven't been able to take photos much lately.

Not wide open, but something about this len's color and contrast...at least to my unpolished eyes
