I want to use this Alien Bees 7" reflector with the grids as hairlight for Speedlites. The simple mod starts with 2 piece L brackets, joint together with a bolt, the idea was to separate them for easy storage. Since the reflector and grid together weight only couple ounces, I use 3M double side tape to stick the L bracket to the reflector. The back shielding disk is made out of cardboard.

Use the small ball head to hang the hair light on a boom arm, it could be pointed to any direction.

Test pics with the prototype. The AB grid does great job for flare control.

What you think?

Lotto, your inventions always look professional and work well. I just don't know if it's really better than a simple snoot or strobist-type drinking straw grid attachment in practical usage?

Curtis, I could've gone Strobist route if I don't already own the set of AB grids and gels, and since I use softboxes for my Bees, those reflectors are sitting on the shell most of the time.

I think this setup is more efficient to tramsmit/reflect the light forward than the staws, plus a bit softer light.

Lotto - very creative and a fine looking hairlight mod. Plus, as you point out, probably delivers good directional, soft light. I find really interesting the DIY adaptations that closely approximate expensive accessories - also some good ones on FM occasionally.

Thanks for the post!

Here's a post on FM for a DIY snoot using drinking straws much like Curtis mentioned:
