Nice breakdown, there, kcb. With the 100mm macro, the 'close-up bokeh' is awesome, as well. Go back to the shot of the 'eye' a few posts ago. You'll see what I am talkin' about, when you see her brow. There was 0 pp on the brow, in that pic...it's just the lens, doin' its thing.

I like bokeh. Is that what you would refer to when aperture is opened all the way and you get that shallow depth of field?

I've always understood "Bokeh" to be a subjective thing.

It's not the blur itself but the quality of the blur. Lenses with more iris blades create smoother backgrounds than lenses with fewer.

Also the construction of the lens plays a part. For example, the weird "donut" highlights you get from a mirror lens Vs the glassy smoothness from the 85mm f/1.2L.

There is a smoothness I sometimes like with the background, especially if I really want to isolate the subject. This is shot with the 85L @ 1.4, 50 ISO just to get rid of the detail in the back. But it is the smoothness of what can happen with that particular lens that I like. Sometimes I get really neat bokeh with the 70-200@200 and 2.8 and sometimes it has too much shape when I'd prefer a wash of color and contrast, I'll move around a bit trying to make that happen with the background when shooting something. I just got the 135L f2 to offer me another focal length to work this same type of bokeh or possibly slightly different, I don't know but the initial shooting is making me think it'll be fantastic.

Bokeh is simply a tool, one opposite of when I was going through a period where I wanted everything in focus and used a large view camera with swings and tilts.

That's what's so much with photography as a creative medium, there really are so many directions you can take it if you're willing. It's neat because you can't learn it all so there's always new beginnings with the way you see and lenses like these open new opportunities.

I'm at a place now where I'd love to be able to shoot a whole bunch with my fast lenses in the ISO 1600-3200 range at the end of the day when photographing people, the light can just get fantastic at that time of day.

Great Shots! I see that you used your 50mm lens on the first two, but what lens did you use on the last two?
Thanks,

I'm guessing the 24-70L.

Nice tony...lovely flowers. Who's the fella in the hat?

One more from me, wife and I went to Savannah, Ga., a day before my b'day, which is today (8/31) Cheers. Apologies, in advance for the copyrights. All the pictures I display, get reviewed, and hopefully accepted by photoshelter. I don't want people stealing them, but, at least I make it hard, even if they do. :(

More like informal student -- he has my 30D and EF-S lenses on a long term loan and we get out when we can and I pass on my limited knowledge and experience and we have some fun!
