Quick and dirty portrait of my dad, 2x ST-E2s (no need for RadioPoppers), no light modifiers, just direct flash.

I recently added a pair of Elinchrom 600RXs so here's two early lighting efforts shot with my 5D:

Nice shot of the bottle. Any way to remove the line cutting the label at the top? Other than that, it's awesome. Got a pic of the setup? I love those...hehe.

Nice map, too! Very intricate.

Thanks...

I had a speedlight near left as a "kicker" on the bottle that I'm thinking I didn't need. I should have had two soft light sources but one of the Elinchroms came out of the box with a busted modeling lamp so I only have the one head for now. B&H are sending me a replacement.

The map is a Terminal Area Chart (TAC) for Phoenix, AZ. TAC charts are drawn at a relatively short distance scale since they only cover slightly more than 30nm around the major airport upon which they're centerd. This helps pilots find and identify the landmarks that are usually associated with the boundaries around Class B airports.

Yeap...figured it was something along those lines...as well as your id. Pretty cool...my dreams as a kid were to be a pilot. Guess it just wasn't meant to be of a plane, though, those were my aspirations. Now, I just pilot a camera, and some lenses!

Are you sure you're allowed to post that type of info? haha...there's 'people' out there, lookin' for info. like that, no? In either case, it's a lovely diagram of pertinent info. Love it, and it's intricacies.

Oh, and how do you like the lights? What's their 'future' purpose? One more thing...if you have a macro lens...please take a pic of that compass. Looks awesome.

You can buy one in any pilot shop in the country. There's nothing on an aviation chart that isn't on a map (with the obvious exception of the airspace designations...)

Oh, and how do you like the lights? What's their 'future' purpose?

So far, so good. Unfortunately, one of them came out of the box with a broken modeling lamp (replacement is otw from B&H) so I've yet to use two at once. I can tell already though that I'm getting a much better quality of light.

Future purpose? I want to expand my table-top / commercial-product skills as well as fine-art still life. I suppose eventually I could shoot people too but that's not necessarilly an area that really gets me fired up right now.

One more thing...if you have a macro lens...please take a pic of that compass. Looks awesome.

I'll add it to the list (I do have the 100mm f/2.8 Macro...) My Dad used it in WWII... ;)

For about

Yeah, people never really did anything for me either. Then, I got a wake up call...and realized that IT is only so safe. I've been thru mergers before, and it didn't phase me, but, this last one...really brought it home. They just don't care...it's all about costs.

I for one, needed that kick, to say, hey...stupid...it's time you have a backup plan. I have a second modeling gig lined up for next weekend. I'm no pro at it...but, I'm taking my chances...and continuing the IT effort...till this new venture takes off, if ever. Meanwhile, I'll have fun trying, and working really hard at it. I don't want to be a 'weekend warrior' anymore. I want to get so big into this, that I'd have my own studio, someday...ah...to dream is to achieve, right???

Let's see what happens...though, from what I can tell so far...next Sat. is going to be out of control! I'm psyching myself up...and hope that my imagination, and skills, will produce what the Navy wives would like for their offshore husbands! :)

Cheers. WWII eh?

Did you mean 2 x 580s? ???

The first one is weird, but, cool in it's own sorta weird way. Should have just one, for that shot, I think....but, I like it anyway.

The second, it's nice, balanced, and the light is good. Though, had you placed a colored gel on the second flash, the one behind him, firing directly at the wall, the background would be a nicer 'color' and would provide some light around his shoulders...which would also separate him from the background a tad more. Sharpness, and everything else is spot on, including the light, and white balance. Oh, and crop the top, a little...since it's a close-up. Less negative space up above.

Good job. I've just been reading, watching, etc. too much...haha. sorry. :(

I think it's just JPEG artifacts.

Yup...

(IIRC) He was 5th Army, 32nd Infantry (Red Arrows) under General Clark in Italy...

He passed several years ago but I have his Purple Heart along with some copies of Yank and Stars & Stripes. Oh, and the 9mm Luger he brought back.

Never told me a lot of stories but what he did talk about was pretty chilling. He told me about being in a foxhole watching the bombers go over all day hitting Monte Casino.
