The filename will give a rough indication, however you can reset this in the software.

Yeapo, I like it. Just would like to see a bit more smoothness in the water, and less highlights clipped, but, other than that, the POV is nice. Oh, and watch your horizons.

Oh, and watch your horizons.

Even with a grid on my focusing screen, I often find it difficult to get a truly straight horizon, at least handheld. I guess that's one of the things a tripod is good for.

In the case of the shot you're referring to, it's going to be especially difficult, because in this case there's some barrel distortion, so the horizon is actually slightly curved. Add the terrain on the right hand side and I'd say he did an excellent job of getting the horizon reasonably straight. :-)

Yeap, I realized that...as I checked the exif. The 17-40 experiences the same issues, as the 24-105. Eventually, I'll sell the 17-40 and just get a 14L. For now, I'm content with 18 - 19 mm, for my landscapes. :D

Had he been at about 25mm, it may have reduced it, or nullified it. Just my impression...at least that's how the 24-105 works with my cam. ;)

Interesting. I've not experimented with mine to see where the pincushioning ends, but I'm shooting a 40D (I'll join the full-frame ranks soon enough, once they release the 5D successor. I really want nearly 3 stops better high-ISO performance than my 40D gives, and the 5D successor should achieve that unless Canon holds back something), so it won't be quite as pronounced.

He was at 28mm and you can see the barrel distortion in the horizon. It's not horrible or anything, but the horizon makes it apparent. Nothing else about the shot would show it, though.

Sounds like you have an exceptional 24-105L, if you're getting basically no barrel distortion at 25mm (only 1mm more than the lens' minimum focal length!)...

Hmm....was 25mm a typo? Maybe you meant 35mm. :-)

nope..25mm. As far as I remember. I don't really use it...the wife does. It's hers.

and on the 17-40, by 18-19 mm, it's gone.

I often use my 24-105 at the wide end as its a little sharper than my 17-40. I find that both the 24-105 and the 17-40 exhibit distortion at the wide end. I think my 10-22 on crop has less distortion than either the 17-40 or the 24-105 on FF.

I have the grid screen in my 5D, which does help with horizons.

^^ Notice the distortion on either disappear, at a certain point?

Davo, with the grip, now you can experience the handstrap! To me the 5D gripped with the handstrap is awesome. But, hey, that's just me. ;)
