This is where a small flash, bounced from the ceiling, would have allowed at least another a 1/4 to a 1/3 stop of light. That would have prevented the 1/50th sec. (even with IS), and would have achieved 1/80th, where you'd be seeing much sharper, less noisy pics.

However, seen you said those are the 'untouched' jpegs...open DPP (the canon software), and open the 'Raw' file. Within there, open the tool palette, and go to the RGB tab...sharpen a little bit in there, and tweak some other settings, including white balance. You'll notice a 'huge' difference...or at least I believe you should... ;)

Thanks for the advice. I don't possess a flash here, so that's out. I will have a go at the RAW, though I'll be using PS-CS2, not DPP.

I use CS3...but, sometimes, the sharpening and WB functions of DPP are much better than PS. That's just my opinion, though, ymmv.

I use DPP for all WB adjustment and RAW conversion - much better, IMO.

versed, Sell em to a puzzle company. The mushrooms!

One thing, FlyingPhotog...wish the rim had an even layer of salt. That's the only one nit, I really have.

As for WB, can't make the corrections with a jpg, otherwise, I would have attempted an edit.

I just purchased a lightly used 5D, I've been shooting with a 40D. I took some sample pictures today in my plant @ 3200 ISO and the images just blew me away!

I've been happy with the 40D but when shooting above 1000 ISO I am getting too particular about noise. I can't believe the difference.

WOW

Nice Shots, ed and ahmeng.

The kid has a priceless expression. Maybe a touch too red, but, other than that, it's a great portrait...haha..can't stop laughing at his expression!

Oh...and Here's one, from this morning. It's posted up in a thread in G&N. The other shots warrant being in the G&N section... ;)

Very nice shot Manish. I'm digging the contrasts of blue against the neutral green background. The 85L is probably my all time favorite lens...One day I'll own one!
