Random question. Do any of you 5D owners shoot without a flash most of the time?

flash? what's that?

ETA:
actually, when i bought the 5d, i didn't realize that it didn't have the pop-up flash - d'oh! I was more interested in the full framedness of it. Haven't bought an external flash yet. Here's a wedding I shot this past weekend (i wasn't there as the photog, just there as a guest so i was playing) - the room with the reception was dark, so i bumped up the ISO eventually up to the max... love the images i got from the 5d and the 85 f1.8

Nice candid shots... Easy to stay stealthy without a flash, eh?

Pretty impressive shots you got there. I guess using the 5D without a flash wont be that bad but its kinda necessary.

Thanks! I do think it is easier to be 'stealthy' - in fact, i practice a lot without putting the camera up to my eye so that i can get some really good candids when people don't expect it.

As some have said, it depends on your needs. Obviously, studio work would need flash/lighting but if you like to use natural light, there's nothing that I've used that would match what the 5d can do... even in near darkness :)

Ok, a little over the top (well, way over the top) but sometimes the 5DMkI can't quite match the EyeballMkI:

This is a nice one Flying! Love the colors in the sky. I should've never sold my 5D. :(

Quick question about the 5D (I'm a 40D owner but very interested in FF): If you convert the 12 mp of the 5D into a 1.6 crop factor camera, the 5D would be about a 5 mp body. I am a bird photographer and use a long lens and often zoom in on the image for the final crop. How does the relatively low pixel density of the 5D affect the rendering of small detail like bird's eyes? Is this more than compensated for by reduced noise etc?

I photograph lots of birds with my 5D, generally using my 100-400L at its longest. I would say you need to get the lens that'll do the job, but then the IQ and low noise will help you with your cropping.

I'd try to work out what focal length you mostly use for birds with your 40D, then decide what prime focal length would do that job properly for you. Convert that number to the FF equivalent and then see whether there exists a prime lens that'll do the job. Better, cheaper and lighter than a comparable zoom covering the same range. Obviously err slightly on the side of being a bit wider.

I wouldn't get too fast a lens, as it bumps up both price and weight enormously. I don't have problems with the f5.6 my lens gives me, and so long as I've shot RAW I can compensate quite easily for quite a lot of backlight.

I turn off all AF points bar one and restrict metering to that point, so i can ensure the bird is properly exposed regardless of it's surroundings & background. Doesn't always work, of course!

Back in film days I used a reflex (mirror) lens for this sort of work, and was very pleased with the results I got from a relatively inexpensive lens (I haven't even seen my FD gear for several years and can't remember what the lens was, but I think it was a 500 f8 Sigma). But no-one seems to use reflex lenses with digital cameras so they aren't to be found anywhere - I wonder why that is?

5D & 7D (both gripped), 24-105L, 100-400L, 15-85, 50 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 12-24, G10, EX-Z55 & U/W housing, A1+10 lenses, tripods, lighting gear, etc. etc.

Also depends on how close you are to your subject, to start off with. I've gotten some decent shots, without degradation, as long as the light quality is decent. That being with the 5D and 400 5.6L, or even the 300 f4l is, etc. You can check on my flickr account, should you like to see some birds...they'll probably be on the earlier pages (5 and above), but, they are there.

^^ I dunno...could just be this monitor...I've got dual screens at work...so that may cause some issues. Again, neither is calibrated...so, gimme a couple hours. I'll let you know... :)

And thrash_273...I dunno if you'd find many people willing to give up a 5D for trade. Not for a 40D, at least...and definately no-one I know of...that posts in this thread. But, you will be amazed with the image quality, even with a 3 year old cam.

I think the MK II looks good, in theory, but, still no weather sealing, etc. That's a key for me...cause I want to shoot out in the rain...and can't with the 5D. 1Ds next round...whether it be 3 or 4...who knows. Need money, first!

ive always amaze w/ 5DI. i will get it one way or the other just a matter of time.=D cheers

Just give it some time. I'm sure you will see lots of them up for sale, in the next month, or so, before the new one is brought to market. Just be on the lookout, that's all.
