I agree with Perry, it is hard to do. I've studied a lot of Lord V's techniques, over in the macro forum, and it's 'still' hard to get right. Though, Peter, what I can suggest is getting on the ground, with a macro lens, when the dew is still on the grass, in the spring/summer. Put a mat underneath you, so you don't get soaked, and then, play with refraction...it's pretty cool.
Thanks Jay, that's what I just figured out, and you confirmed for me. For on location stuff, I think monolights will probably be a better solution. For a 'true' indoor studio, Packs/Heads might be a great option...but, the added weight to carry around on location wouldn't help.
Alongside this, I'm thinking that a battery unit, such as the VBII would be good to attach to a lightstand, so that it creates some weight, but, I don't know that even that would allow the lightstand to stand still, with some of the hardcore breeze scenarios we have here.
Another reason why I like the speedlites, but, I'm limited with their use, as well...sometimes (especially in the dark).
