That's a good find! Did the previous owner upgrade to a 5DM2?

Previous owner has a 1Ds2 and 1Ds3. Bastard!!

Tony, I like the first one, because the sky isn't blown.

True that -- it was late and the lighting was, well...

It's one of those things where if I had a real keeper I could get it into PS and probably bring the sky back. In my pure Lightroom rendition I tended to let the sky go a bit and concentrate on the other stuff:)! It would at least be a case for pseudo HDR!

Here are a couple different renditions of #2:

A bit more sky detail:

Hey, thanks for your input, Clarence!

I guess this could go into the RAW Post Processing Etc. group, but we have more fun here!

Anyway, I think the upshot of things for this type of shot is first to bite the bullet and upgrade to LR 2 for the selective adjustments -- I think if I could have taken the first one and just applied a local lowering of exposure to the sky all would have been groovy.

But, of course, I've gotten lazy in Photoshop, so some day I'll have to kick my butt into gear to dive back in there. Not tonight, though -- I have to wake up early and hit it!

Hey, we've even run a line out to the outhouse! And our phones even have dials -- we upgraded from the hand-crank variety at least a year ago:)!

5D does 1/200 flash sync with the option to do High Speed Flash Sync by setting the option to do so in the Canon flashes currently available. So, can HSFS be achieved using Pocket Wizards? Also, can it be achieved using one of the Vivitar flashes like the Vivitar 285HV?

I've tried studio strobes and the 5D won't go past 1/160th without a black band on the right of the frame.

As for HSS, the flash has to be on Camera, or (correct me if I'm wrong), the ST-E2 will allow HSS. That's about it.

As for the Vivitar...if it detects pre-flashes, it might be capable with HSS but I've never used one so I don't know for sure. Someone with more experience probably knows better than I.

Cool path there. I like the way the tree branches sort of make a trussle (if that's what it's called) over the actual path. Nice contrast, in the scene, as well! While I don't miss snow...I love seeing the shots in it! ;)

I use my 5D with studio strobes all the time at 1/200th with no banding, I wonder why one would and one wouldn't.
