I use my 5D with studio strobes all the time at 1/200th with no banding, I wonder why one would and one wouldn't.

What type of studio strobes are you using and this is a noobish question but what is "banding"?

Jannie, could just be the 'type' of strobes. With Speedlites, it's not a problem. But, with diffrerent studio strobes, with short flash durations, that's where the problems come up.

In the past two times I've used a studio, one kit was a novatron and one was interfit. I didn't like either, because they both lacked some serious features. Neither set would be ideal, for anything 'artistic' and produces rather weird skin tones. I tried using the 85L at f/8, 1/200, at iso 100, and noticed in both situations, I had a black stripe on the right side of the frame. Going to 1/160th...no problems. So, I believed it to be the lights' fault, not the camera...but, just can't tell, for sure.

The 'banding' jitu, is a black stripe along the edge of the right side of the frame.

Love that last one, Jay. Never ever seen that part of the Country...even though I've been to Nevada. I've always wanted to visit Arizona...and hopefully, someday, I will!

I'll look you up, when I get the chance! ;)

By the way, how're the lights workin' out? I'm really close to being able to afford a set, and now, I need to figure out what to go with.

I have a question about the 5D : why are there 3 positions for the power button : ON, OFF, and a third position ?
I have noticed that when in manual mode I have to turn this button in the third position so I can change the exposure time. But the question is : is there something we can do in the ON position and we can not do in the third position ?
Are the OFF and the third position not enough ?

Haven't shot much with them of late since it's been so nice outdoors.

One of the quirks of living in Arizona is you tend to do much more indoor stuff during the summer Vs how most folks do so during the winter.

I've got my list of photo club projects for 2009 and several will include doing some "product" shooting...

Other way around...it's something you can't do:

In the "On" position, the rear wheel is locked out. AFAIK, it's meant to help avoid inadvertant aperture changes in manual or unwanted exposure compensation changes in the program modes.

I hear ya Jay, it's almost the same way here. I'd rather be out on location during the winter, than the summer...it's so HOT and humid...it's like hell outside in summertime.

Oh, and Tony...I'm going to pick the one with 'a lot more detail' because it's warmer, but, the sky also shines in that one...with the details of the blues/clouds/etc. Love reflection shots...!

is there a Custom function that allows you to swap the rear wheel for shutter speed instead of aperture and the small wheel for aperture??? just curious
