I'll just put this out there to those of you who have posted images:
HOW MUCH SHARPENING DID YOU APPLY? Some of the pics are just shockingly sharp...can it be out camera like that?

The 5D does seem to need much less sharpening than any cam I have owned (D30, XT, 20D, 40D)

I love my 5D so much, I sold my 40D at the weekend to pay for some macro equipment instead. Now I can take pictures like this:

Just a snapshot... straight out of the camera.. no sharpening ..nothing. I find most of my 5d shots don't need anything done to them.

Man.. I just bought the 5D on amazon. But it seems that I have having the biggest trouble trying to get my credit cards to go through. It is a bit weird. Tried American Express credit card to my bank card and finally my Check book. Lets see if that works.. >_<

most of the time i get the barclays secure checkout come up on me, asking for a password etc etc... it goes through after that etc.
its about normal tho, the fraudsters out there, the bank makes it harder for us rather really try to make it harder for them. ah well... so long as nothing comes in the way of your 5d hapiness!

Hi guys, hope all is well. Bit of a request.

Im flying out to Germany soon for some nightclub work and am thinking about picking up a new lens asap if I can. Looking for something at 17mm.

So what I would like to know or see a comparison shot of something at 17mm and 24mm. Local store does not have anything in the 17mm range in stock. :(

17-40 f4 .... perfect companion to the 24-205 i hear.... also, form pics i have seen... 24mm on ff is wide... the 17mm on ff is hard-on enducingly wide! :D hahaha im sure theres a thread with 17-40 pics in it? and down that low in the focal range each 1mm is a big jump.

Ah I don't know if I have any comparison shots of the same scene (i.e. pics that would show the difference well), but let me tell you - 24 is a wide angle. 17 is RIDICULOUSLY wide. It's a massive, massive difference, as 17 lingers toward the wide end of the ultra-wide range, whereas 24 is more of a traditional wide angle.

As for the sharpening question - I sharpen all my images, but not much. The 5D's images definitely need a lighter touch with the sharpening in post, for more see the link in my sig.

Here's a quick couple of the "Disgrace" in Edinburgh, first one is at 17mm, second at 24mm:

Taken from different angles/positions (but from about the same distance), but shows the field of view and perspective differences, I think. 17mm is w-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-d-e on a FF!

Thanks for your replies guys. Think I will pick up the Sigma 17-35 for Germany and then transfer that to my crop body later as the walkabout lens and pick up the Canon 17-40L for the 5D. I know how badly it craves for high end glass.

Is f4 gonna be acceptable for club shoots?

wbm, what are those powdery things? and with the 100 macro you could have gone a lot closer , right? That's not at 1:1 magnification.
