Looks like you used the 580EX II with the head facing forward for direct flash. Did you dial down the 580EX II's output? If so, would you please tell us approximately how much? Thanks! Thanks.
I aim for facial/body light only and since I work at high ISO, the light spreads to hair highlights. If I need, the lowest I will go is 45 degrees. Facing it straight on just washes out this richness in colour since these are not PP'ed and tend not to even bother.
I always try and aim my flash slightly infront since it gives a nice catchlight in the eyes also. I do the same with my 430EX but use a Stofen Omnibounce which is also nice since I can give that bulb effect and further soften shadows but upon shooting with the 580EX II, it seems I can get away without it. For the richness in colour, its all done by ambient light so high ISO and shooting wide open. Hope that helps. Everyday, a programmer finds a way of creating an idiotproof program. Here's a version of the 2nd picture where I've used contrast-masking in CS2 to try to preserve the contrast in the monument as well as the sky (also using a slightly different tritone.) There's a wee bit of a halo, but that's from Smugmug's sharpening after resizing, the original doesn't show it. Not totally blow away 5d images but it was interesting to me so i thought i'd post ![]() planetMitch
