A series of pictures taken at Goodwood, a test day for the various classes which run under the Top Hat Banner.

A nice sunny day as you will see! But very cold and windy.

1 - A Piper GT

4 - ex Alan Mann Lotus Cortina. Just after this shot he spun with lots of tyre smoke into the barrier and damaged the offside front wing.

All taken with a 20D using 100 - 400 lens.

I don't know if it happens to you I ended with some really good shots all of the same cars, in this case the Sprite and Mustang. Then there are other cars which all the pictures are rubbish! I also tried moving around the track and the same thing happens with the postion on the track. Oh well.

Incidentally for those in reach of Goodwood there is another similar test session next Saturday 8th March.

Really like the Austin A35 where you can see the driver leaning as well. Yes, but since I got a 1D mk11n, this has stopped, I assume it's to do with the 20D focus not being as good thus not copping with the contrasting colours of some cars as well.

Cheers Alex.....

Nice stuff. Was just looking at the EXIF and you used quite a few settings. The first one I see has a shutter speed of 1/2000... I looked further down and I think you must have used an "Auto" mode. In my opinion I would use Shutter Priority (or Manual) so "you" control the shutter speed... obiously with motorsport you need to show the speed every now and then... which you did well with the shot of the mini.

Ref your problem:- "I ended with some really good shots all of the same cars, in this case the Sprite and Mustang. Then there are other cars which all the pictures are rubbish!" = I've found that certain coloured cars are tracked better by the AF than other, particularly blue, yellow and white - not sure why, probably something to do with contrast. When using Shutter Priority (TV mode) white cars can sometimes underexpose slightly and dark cars overexpose slightly, that's why I generally shoot Manual... maybe give that a try too.

Thanks for the advice and comments. Test days like these are good not only for testing the cars but at least for me to try out various settings and generally experiment with the photography!

Nice set ;)

Seeing this thread keeps reminding me that I need to go down more often, afteral I am not much further 'up the road' than you at Guildford.

I have had a look at the Goodwood site and also note the Breakfast Club calendar may be worthy of noting for planning ahead?

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

Dunno about soft but #s 1,2, 4, 6, 7 and 8 all look a little back-focused to some degree or other. Exposure and framing is nice.
