Hi there, I'm having a bit of an issue with my a720is lately. When I turn it on it asks me to set the date/time - so I do. Then next time I turn it on it asks again.

I've even been into the menu, set it, saved it, gone back to the menu list and I can see it's still at 00/00/000 etc.

Sorry if the answer is really simple, but i'm getting frustrated as I usually grab the camera to take a spontaneous shot of my daughter and the stupid date/time message means I usually miss the pose I wanted to capture :(.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

-Irene.

Put a fresh set of batteries in it and let it sit (turned off) overnight. This should let the on-board backup battery recharge. If you still get asked the date/time, call Canon; you may need warranty service.

Wow I hope not, I only bought the camera in Feb!

Do I put the batteries in, then set the date then let it sit or just let it sit?
I only ask cos in the menu it appears I can't even set it. I mean i'll input the date, click set, then it's gone already.

New/fresh batts then set everything, turn off and let sit overnight.

NiMh are really the only batteries for this.

Hmm the problem with that is that when you go into the canon config menu you can see the date is at 00/00/00 so I click on it, input the date, save it, it takes me back to the config menu and, unfortunately, it's still at 00/00/00.
So it's not a matter of it forgetting the date when I turn it off, it's not even saving it at all.

Ok weird. I just took the batteries out, put them back in, flicked the card out and put it back in then turned the camera on and off and apparently the last time I entered the date (earlier today) actually worked.

Very annoying cos I have no idea what actually caused it in the first place and now half my photos of my daughter have the date 01 Jan 1980 embedded in the file. Heh.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll purchase some nimh's and hopefully this problem won't happen again.

Just to say that I have a 300D and have exactly the same problem!! and just like you I need it to take pics of my daughter quickly! so annoying, I have posted lots of places but still havn't solved it.

My problem seemed to coincide with updating my firmware.

My 300D uses a small lithium CR2016 battery which I have replaced but its still won't hold the time - any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I'm having a similar problem with my A720 IS.

I input the date/time, and the camera will retain it for a couple weeks. Then, it will show up blank and I have to input it again. This time, I have to do this EVERY time I power up the camera. I installed a new memory battery. That lasted about 2 weeks, then the problem reoccurred. I replaced the battery a SECOND time thinking I bought a bad battery; it happened again.

I e-mailed Canon and they were very quick to respond. They suggested removing the memory battery AND the AA batteries and letting the camera sit for at least 20 minutes.

That worked-for about two weeks.

Canon said if that doesn't solve my problem, then it's probably a repair issue.

I purchased my camera in February 2008.

Then, like Canon said, it's probably a repair issue; and you should still be under warranty.
