I bought a Manfrotto monopod, and also bought a tilt-only head for it.

i'm wondering if it's even worth the added size/weight to have it on there ... don't you just end up tilting the whole thing if you need it?

i could see where it would come in handy, but am not sure if it's necessary.

??

I like a ball head on mine....my tripod and monopod share the 488 RC2. Sometimes i like to brace the monopod against something, like my foot or a wall and the ballhead gives me freedom to position the camera any way i want.

I have a tilt head on mine, its quite useful if you cant get the monopod vertical which I find is frequently the case, I tend to wedge it into things for added stabilty when I dont bother with a tripod.

I use one 488RC2 between monopod and tripod as well. The 488RC2 is probaby overkill for the monopod but was the cheapest alternative since I use the tripod as well. I use the monopod much more than the tripod so if I need it I just take off one and put it back on the other.

I'm probably in the minority, but no ballhead. Just a Kirk qr clamp.
I usually only use my mono with a lens that has a tripod ring, so while i can't exactly swivel that up/down, it does let me rotate from portrait to landscape easily.
Guess that is enough for me.

I use the Manfrotto tilt bracket with a RRS screw knob clamp (no ballhead) - while I'm sure the QR is generally plenty secure, the screw knob clamp just provides a sense of security when carrying the rig with camera/lens over your shoulder.

486RC2 here as well. Not all the lenses I use on it accept tripod mounting rings, so some kind of head is mandatory for portrait orientation. Also, I'm likely to be shooting off the horizontal, and there's a limit to how far you can tilt a monopod and still count on its doing its job.

I also use a Manfrotto 486RC2 atop my Manfrotto 680B monopod and wouldn't have it any other way.

failed to mention i'm new at using a monopod, don't know if i'll even need a head. my lens has a collar mount and after looking up several sports shooter setups i decided to try going without.
