Hey Guys,

To my surprise, my girlfriend bought me a Nikon D300/18-200/SB-600 kit for my birthday, but I am not sure if I should keep it. I had been contemplating over the D300 vs 5D for a few weeks now, since I sold my 30D back in October, and I had finally decided to purchase the 5D since I liked the lens in the Canon line up better.

I am not sure if I should keep the Nikon system or ask her to return it. Would it be rude of me to ask her to return it? Dont get me wrong but I am really grateful that she bought it for me :D.

Either camera would be more than enough for my kind shooting. Well, any suggestions would be welcomed.

Tuan

If I'd bought my boyfriend the wrong thing, I'd rather he told me than keep it because he's too worried about upsetting me, & then have to use something so expensive that he didn't really want!

Gosh, that's a tough one. Personally, I think that the 5D would do better in the image quality area, but that D300 is loaded with features. Do you shoot much at high ISO settings?

If it is going to bring an end to a beautiful romance I'd say you have to keep it! But if she is understanding and you explain then ask her to change it for you, and of course you offer to pay any difference.

It's a great present, though, you lucky man.

Her intentions were there and she did get you quality gear. But if you're not going to be happy with it, it's not going to do anybody any good. Besides, she can return it, get you the 5D, you'll be happy and she will feel good that she got you a gift that you can really use.

I can only speak for myself, but if I received such a gift I would keep it, unless I had a bunch of Canon lenses (which I do have, as well as a 40D.) The D300 certainly will meet your needs and has impressive features that in some ways surpass those of the 5D. The 18-200 is reputed to be excellent and its range makes it a very useful walk-around lens. The Nikon flash system appears to be more user-friendly than Canon's.

With all my Canon equipment, I would have to say "no", but otherwise I would happily accept the generous gift.

I dont think returning it would be a problem. I have been going back and forth between these two for the last month and haven't been able to decide on which one. I must have dragged her to the camera shop to look at both on too many occasions. Maybe she was just sick of hearing about it .

At this moment, I have no Canon equipment. I sold of my 30D/17-55IS combo back in October in anticipation of the 5D MK II but that did not turn out too well for me.

The only reason I am even thinking about returning the D300 is because of the lens selection. I plan on going FF so I did not want to invest anymore on EF-S glass or DX glass.

I could keep the D300 as the D300/18-200 combo would be excellent for traveling. I dont shoot at high ISO often so that is a moot point for me.

I would keep it, because it is a great camera with superb build quality!

Thanks for all the replies guys! I think I will end up just keeping it as it is a hassle to return everything, but lets see if I feel the same way in the morning.

I am excited to learn a new system, but at the same time I am sadden to leave the Canon camp. One of the biggest reason I would like it stay with Canon is because of POTN. I hope I am still welcomed here!

Don't see why you won't still be welcomed,

I traded in my my 20D for a D200 two years ago and never looked back. I still come on here for tips from legends like "Malone" etc. I'm very very very very 100% very sure your very very very happy with your decision to keep that D300. The D200 is great but that D300 is excellent...Coming from a former Canon user who owned many a gear including the holy Trinity, current canon users don't know what there missing...

Welcome to the dark side :)

I'd try the D300 out for a while, it's a cracking good camera.

I'd pick the D300 over the 5D anyday. Better built (weather sealed), professional AF, outstanding LCD and a TON of features. Even the 10MP 40D is close to the 5D. The difference in IQ compared to the D300 is negligible
The D300 is an amazing camera and the Nikon lenses rock! Nothing to regret, and defenatly not worth upsetting your GF over that.
Have fun with your new toy! Take neat pics of your GF :)

Imagine the experience you'll gain from using the Nikon system.

I'm sure there are plenty of Canon users tempted into 'trying' a competitor's product - unfortunately opportunities such as yours just don't come by everyday, and you are one Lucky guy to have such a great gf!

Congrats!
