Ok im purchasing a new camera hopefully within the next week. I was looking at the 400. then i started looking at the 30D. I tried to compare the two but for some reason i couldn't. What is the diff. I know the 400 has a higher mega pixel then the 30d i was looking at. Anyone have any advice as to what to buy.

It really comes down to size and a few features. The image both produce is almost identical. Take a trip to Best buy and handle both. Pick the one you like best.

I would vote for the XTi or XSi over the 30D. Just get a grip for $60 if the size is an issue. Have you looked at the 40D? The XSi seems to be pretty close to the 40D..

There are some great pictures on your Flikr!

Good luck, you won't be disappointed with any of those cameras!

If those two cameras are your choices, jump to the 30D. Key features are the 1/3 ISO increments, centre spot metering and 100k shutter life.

I decided to get a 20D instead of the 400D over a year ago and I'm glad I did it. The thumb wheel on the back allows me to change all kinds of things without holding a button down and twirling the wheel under the index finger. The XXD's have a prism instead of a mirror in the viewfinder so it's larger and brighter. I like the 20D's metal body better than the plastic of the 400D. I can't tell the difference between 8mp and 10mp, not to say there isn't one, I don't print large enough to tell.
The 30D has all of the 20D's features and then some, so I would still take 30D over the 400D.

Just a few thoughts

Rob

If the 300 was big, the 30 will seem bigger and the XTi a bit smaller. Sounds like the XTi is what your looking for.

If you can afford it, and can wait, I'd seriously consider waiting until the XSi (450D) is released before making your purchase. The XSi is a pretty significant upgrade to the XTi, and if you don't feel the new features are worth the price premium, the XTi price should go lower after the new model is released.

If the OP already dislikes the weight and size of the 300D, then it's only going to get worse with a 30D/40D.

go with the 20D.

Just as good as the 30D

the only things that the 30D has of the 20D is spot metering and a slightly bigger screen.

$450-500 for the 20D now.
