Make sure you look at the specs. The 800IS is a fine camera (I have one) and great for casual use and a beginner. It has a better wide angle shot, so you can take close-ups of groups of people much easier (for example, out to a dinner with some old friends and you want a group shot, this is a great camera for that). It also zooms pretty close.

The 850 doesn't have as much a wide-angle (for close-up shots of landscapes or groups of people) but zooms much closer. So, if you think you'll need more zoom, the 850 is better. My gut is, they are the same camera otherwise.

I've checked the 1100 specs quickly on usa.canon.com, and I don't see too much difference EXCEPT it has optical image stabilization, instead of electronic image stabilization. OIS is superior to EIS. So, if the price difference isn't a big deal, then the 1100 will be better than the 850, though the 800 has a better wide angle.

Check here: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canonsd1100is/ (external link)
or google "SD1100 reviews" for other sites.

If this is your first pocket-sized digital camera, then I would say this: you will not go wrong with any of these. Read the manual, learn the menus and how to use it, and you'll take thousands of pictures and be happy with the results. Personally, I think the wide angle of the 800 is very useful, but I have had times where I wanted to get more zoom. Get to an electronics store and try them both.

hmm.... "slow shutter speed and the screen lags alot" ... I guess this because of Noise reduction function. The software in your camera try to reduce the noise from the picture. Anyway see this comparison (external link) to see the different of some models.

well the SD1100 is $250 at circuitcity and the SD850 is $270~ soo the SD 1100 would be the best right? since its better the the SD850 and cheaper! cause of the zoom thing..

i guess the SD1100 is the way to go!

I guess you've probably bought a new camera by now, but I've been asking the same questions just a few weeks ago. I was wanting the SD850 IS (in Europe IXUS 950 IS) simply because camera.co.uk compares the 2 and the picture quality on the SD850 ISseems to be better than the SD1100 IS (in Europe IXUS 80 IS).

Unfortunately I couldn't buy an SD850 IS (it wasn't in stock) and settled with the SD1100 IS. I'll never know if the SD850 IS is better, but I'm very happy with the SD 1100 IS's ease of use (which is supposed to be better than the 850) and I'm very happy with the anti-shake, I couldn't ask for better.

Well I believe the SD850 and SD1100 have essentially the same 8 MP 1/2.5 sensor, so I wouldn't expect much, if any IQ difference beyond camera-to-camera variations.

I have been using the A720 IS which I like very much, but I also wanted a small camera for those occasions when I want to carry it easily in purse or pocket. I am very pleased with my new SD1100. It is very easy to use and the quality of the images seems to me to be very good. If you want a small, easy to use camera, the SD 1100 is a fine choice.
