Could it be that I was manually focusing (thus user error) in the other picture? Does "front/back" focusing lens have focusing issues in manual and auto focus... or just auto?

Just auto, where the camera and lens confirms the focus. In manual focus, your eyes and brain decides if the lens is focused.

Is this a problem?

A real world example (though a terrible picture) looks ok to me though. I was focused on the left eye.

Please God Almighty leave those tilted test charts ALONE!
Even Canon says that if youre going to use the microadjustment feature on the MkIIIs to use a FLAT PERPENDICULAR SURFACE. Those tilted charts have messed up so many people and convinced so many people that something is wrong with their lens when there really isnt a problem! If it works in the REAL WORLD (which it looks like it does) then its ok!

I wasn't able to get it back together. It is a photo subject now... and a paper weight... that is about it.

I'd sell it on Ebay personally, you'd be amazed what people will pay for brokens stuff there. Just be sure to use full disclosure.

I'm just uploading some test pics with the focus test you suggested on the other thread. I did the focus test when it was suggested here, and it seemed OK (a bit of a back focus). Now that you mention on the other thread that it looks off I have done the test again... and now it looks pretty obviously off. :(

Is it still under warranty? If so I'd send it in for an adjustment/check-up. Just to be safe. Something may be causing it to be off focus occasionally.

This was done as a quick check since the lens was dropped, and in another thread the OP posted and extremely front focused shot at f/16 where only about the front 1/3 of a pencil was in focus. Although this chart would indicate back-focus. Which makes me lean towards erratic focusing.

I don't care for the charts either, but sometimes they can be handy.
