These were taken with my Canon Powershot A310 during the Washington Redskins vs New York Giants game during week three of the 2007-2008 season.

The zoom photos were by far more than horrible:

So just curious, why even bother posting them here? There is not much to say other than DON'T use "digital" zoom on a P&S and expect to get good quality photos. If you have to be that far up and want to try and capture good "sports" images, either get much better gear (DSLR, big zooms etc.) or focus more on the things surrounding the game. Example, close ups of fans cheering, or fans in jerseys and "war paint". Get a nice and in focus wide angle of the full stadium. Shots of cars in parking lots and fuzzy players on the field and fuzzy shots of scoreboards and fans just don't cut it. Sorry.

Just got a DSLR (ordered today), I'll get you those shots this year :)

I'm sorry to burst your bubble but these are just poor snapshots, some even have heads in the way of them??! Perhaps take some time to browse the sports section of the forum and see what the posters in there post. Sure, having a DSLR will improve your photography but don't rely on it to turn you into a pro. I encourage you to keep posting and ask tons of questions, you have a great tool in your new XTi and the friendly people on the Forum here will help you.

The A310 isn't a horrible camera, actually:

http://www.pbase.com/cameras/canon/powershot_a310 (external link)

http://www.cameras.co.uk …=Canon%20Powershot%20A310 (external link)

It deserves better than this, especially in broad daylight. My wife had an A300, which was the predecessor of the 310, and while it's no DSLR, it is an average P&S and produces OK results considering it's more than 3 years old.

IIRC, this camera has no optical zoom (and like a 5X digital zoom), so the absolute last thing you want to do with an out of focus shot is to digitally zoom.

While you may not get really tight shots, the images you get should at least be in focus.

I need to say something: simply purchasing a DSLR is not a panacea and will not magically produce amazing images. In fact, if you're having trouble operating a simple P&S like this, you may find yourself swamped with the options a DSLR gives you.

In addition, you need to practice composition and timing (though from the nosebleed seats, even great timing won't make much difference). Can you shoot some at kids games or something? If you now have an XTi, that's great, but buying a new Driver will not make me a pro golfer.

This I know dmwierz, I will need to practice, I have messed with my aunts Olypus E-500, I believe that's the model, didn't do to bad, but I did need work. I just take tons and tons of pictures and decided I should probably step up to something better.

Those images are actually great that are off of pbase, they did an excellent job.

But don't worry, I know I wont be just snapping left and right and have great pictures, practice is what it's all about.
