Hey,

A local is selling this Hoya purple line filter kit for $60.

Wondering if anyone has had any positive or negative experiences with these filters?

Does it matter how many layers are on the filter?

Here's a link for reference

thanks

Don't waste your money; they're uncoated (polarizer) and minimally coated (UV). Multi-coating cuts down both light loss and flare-inducing reflections; for Hoya filters, S-HMC is the minimum level you should consider. The B+W equivalent level is MRC; with Heliopan it's SH-PMC. Other filter brands aren't really worth considering as a rule.

Thanks Jon. Now if I get the Heliopan CP without the multi-coat, would that help with flare reductions? I know you stated above that the multi coat helps with the flare reduction but what does a CP filter do without the coating? I'd like to have the SH-PMC but that is a little bit more.

Multicoating is the only thing that'll help reduce lens flare if the light can reach the lens; a polarizer is no less susceptible to flare from light striking it than a UV filter. It'll still handle the normal duties of a polarizer, but you'll need to be extra careful to keep light sources out of the lens' field of view.
