I think the 20D is still an excellent camera capable of great results. I only upgraded mine because I am one of those sad people who has to have the latest thing. I could have saved myself a lot of money if I had kept it!

That's interesting!

I thought only my 30D was capable of doing that.

and it's a shame that some people feel the need to get a newer body because they think it will automatically result in better pictures.

OTOH, it makes for lower prices in Marketplace for the rest of us! :D

Yes.

The only thing that really bugs me is flash sync. The custom function to lock the flash sync at 1/250 seems useless to me. I wish it were 1/125 or 1/60.

Why? That only affects Av; if you want to use a different sync speed, use Tv or M. Are you working in bright enough conditions that 1/60 or 1/125 will give you a reasonably-exposed (or at least not black) background while 1/250 won't? If you're using a flash that won't sync at 1/250 sec., you probably don't want to be using Av anyhow.

40D or 30D does not have a single feature I desparately need and is missing from my 20D. Needless to say I haven't upgaded. The 5D on the other hand...

When I have tried to use the flash sync with Av mode, I found that the exposures at 1/250 were dark and underexposed. It seems unusable to me, and I ended up turning it off altogether.

The key is to take control of your camera & flash & learn what your equipment will do.
For that, I prefer to use manual everything.

The custom function to lock the flash sync at 1/250 seems useless to me. I wish it were 1/125 or 1/60.

Same answer. 1/250 is the fastest sync without going into the custom menus, & you can use any speed below that.

Re-read Jon's post very slowly. And PhotosGuy's message, too. Slowly. Use M or Tv, not Av, even P gives you 1/60 with flash!

I've had my 20D for three years. Have shot well over a hundred weddings with it....along with a 5D and 10D.
I don't worry about sensor dust....I keep a 70-200 2.8L IS on the body all the time. The camera with the battery grip does a great job for me. Coupled with the L glass, it produces excellent quality images.
Even though my 20D is a couple generations removed from the latest and greatest, I see no reason to replace it. As long as it does what I need, I'll continue using it on a regular basis.

I still love my 20D. I read about the small advances in the 30D. I read about the OK advances in the 40D. But I can live without both, there aren't any features I absolutely have to have in either camera. The 5D is nice, but not worth $2000 for a camera almost as old as the 20D, even though I would love to be able to use my 24mm shift lens properly with a digital camera. I can live without it, too, for now...maybe if it drops more I would succumb! :)

Yeah, the only thing I've ever bought there was a rocket blower. He couldn't admit that the 20D was a decent camera because he didn't have any to sell to me. Another guy there handed me an 85L when I asked to see an 85 1.8. I really wish we had a real camera store around here.

Did you get quoted the normal price of the 85/1.8 for the 85L. I wish I had a camera store that would do that.:)
