Sorry, but I had to Add /30D to the title, IMHO the 30D has always been, and will always be the 20Dn.
Same damn camera IMHO. I feel the same way about Mk2 and Mk2n, so I'm being consistant. :)

I do love my 20D, absolutely - and although I nearly succumbed to the allure of the 40D, common sense prevailed and instead I have been adding to my glassware and having a blast shooting stuff.

I'm anticipating a tidal wave of innovation in the next couple of years, and can't wait to see Canon's response to the D3 and D300 - and will probably invest in the 50D or 60D or equivalent, in due course - but the 40D interests me only for the live view, and that only because I just bought my macro lens - and if I'd bouight a 40D I would not have been able to spare the cash for the new macro....

Glass first!

Yeah, the only thing I've ever bought there was a rocket blower. He couldn't admit that the 20D was a decent camera because he didn't have any to sell to me. Another guy there handed me an 85L when I asked to see an 85 1.8. I really wish we had a real camera store around here.

We're blessed with two superb independent, professional camera stores in San Diego. I won't even go near a Ritz...

Years ago, I applied for a job at a couple of the local Ritz stores. The manager at one store told me he was impressed with my resume but said he didn't have any openings. He referred me to another store but I never heard anything from them after dropping off my resume. I suspect the reason I didn't get the job is they didn't want an employee who knew more than they did..

Got the 40D, and the 30D will be perma-attached to the 70-200 2.8 for the weddings.
Otherwise, since the grip moved to the 40D, the 30D has new life in it for being a nice compact camera to grab and go anywhere. I just need to make up my mind if I am getting a 50 1.4 or a 28 1.8.

Re-read Jon's post very slowly. And PhotosGuy's message, too. Slowly. Use M or Tv, not Av, even P gives you 1/60 with flash!

I totally get that. I'm just commenting on the limitations of flash-sync only being allowed to lock at 1/250 in Av mode. I've done some shoots with a friends 10D, which locks at 1/125 in Av mode, and the same shoots were much better IMO.

I'm working towards going all manual, just pointing out that I wish the customizable, or locked at a slightly slower speed. In fact I shot a few pics on another friends Nikon D200 this morning in Av mode. The sync on that was 1/60.

Sure, I still love my 20D, it is going on three years old and, even though it has developed its own quirks, it still takes great pictures just like it did the day I got it. Even if it is only a backup now, I don't see ever selling it.

While I shoot flash in M when using flash as main source, I do wish that if I am relying upon Av TTL ambient metering automation with fill flash, that one could set a 'minimum flash synch' speed like 1/15, so that the camera does not try to use horridly slow shutter speed in order to grab ambient light in the exposure. Sometimes the pace of shooting just doesn't permit one to take the time to notice how slow the meter is trying to set the shutter!

I sold my 30D a few months ago, but it will always hold a special place in my heart since it saved me in Alaska last November when my 1D Mk III died while I was out shooting eagles!

I envy you. Im surrounded by like 5 Wolf (Ritz) Cameras, and the only REAL camera shop (Arlington Camera) is like 30 minutes away.

I just bought my 30D a couple of weeks ago so yes, I still love it :D I waited awhile before upgrading and am glad I did; I paid $799.95 at B & H and now will have some extra $$ to save for a 100-400 L !!

Did you get quoted the normal price of the 85/1.8 for the 85L. I wish I had a camera store that would do that.:)

He did ($479), but he seemed to have a "lightbulb" moment after I played with it for a bit and said "oops, looks like this one is actually $2299." Yeah, the place is a rip-off. I don't mind paying extra at a local shop when they are helpful, but to pay those prices and have the sales people not even know the different between an 85L and 85 1.8? I loved Orben's when I lived in Jacksonville, FL, they were very helpful and patient when I got my film Rebel. Whish I had a place like that around here.
