Photo not showing Lore - its protected on your Zenfolio site it seems.

thanks. hmmmm weird, so you can't link images straight out of your zenfolio & I have to upload them in 2 places (still have to use photobucket) that makes no sence...

No - you can link to images straight out of Zenfolio.....but the default setting in the gallery where you have the photo may be to protect it. You can either change the security levels on the photo or the gallery itself and link away. I use Zenfolio also for all my linking to photos on this site.

Send me a PM if you have any questions on how to do what I have described.

I got my 30D few months ago as my very 1st camera, hoping I would "grow" into in, rather than starting with cheaper ones...I guess I was wrong, as I am not reading any manuals. I have Tamron 28-75 on it, so the combo is very heavy for me. I am thinking of selling both and getting G10 instead. Should I keep 30D and just get lighter lens instead? I need an advise!

I would suggest reading the manual - not reading the manual on a camera like the 30D it to not take advantage of all the wonderful features that it offers. Which also means your photography may suffer for it in a lot of cases.

These cameras are not light; and neither are good lenses. You have a GREAT lens and camera combination there that will provide you with image possibilities that a G10 or other fixed lens camera could not. You have to trade off some portability and comfort for that added image potential and its a sacrifice I have been willing to make for a number of years now.

You may not be willing to make that sacrifice of learning about the camera and lugging it around, but then you will need to be satisfied with what a more limited tool like the G10 can produce.

Katya - no reason you cant go "auto" with your camera and grow into it. If reading manuals is not your thing, maybe a photo club or instruction of some kind may be productive for you.

Back to thread topic - One on my very short list favs from my 30D -

Apexer, how do you like your 17-50? I think i would like that one better for my 30D as it has a wider range and at least half the weight of 28-75.

How do you feel about the weight of the body alone? If it's OK, you might try the Canon EF-S 18-55 IS lens (the IS part is important). It's very light. Weighs approximately nothing at all. It's a good lens, too.

I actually took it apart yesterday to answer that question! I think I can manage. I was thinking about the lens you suggested. I wonder how much quality I have to sacrifice with f/3.5-5.6? But then again, I am a beginner and may not even notice anything!

You won't lose any image quality. The 18-55 IS is optically a very nice lens, especially for the low price.

And it's 18 mm vs. 28 mm minimum focal length - which means you'll get wide angle capability. But of course you'll have less telephoto at 55 mm vs. 75.

Your Tamron is f/2.8 at all focal lengths - the 18-55 is f/3.5 at 18 mm, which is only a half stop slower. But it's two full stops slower at 55 mm, f/5.6 vs. f/2.8.

When I say "slower" I mean you'll have to use slower shutter speeds to get a good exposure.

This won't matter in good light, but if you like to shoot in the dark the smaller aperture will be a limitation.

Yipes! That Tamron is far from a heavy lens to begin with :X

It depends really to be honest, a lot of the good lenses are going to be decently heavy..I'd start to weigh in on "what lenses will i use in the future, and can i actually use them" if you consider the Tamron 28-75 heavy...

Sure having a 30D with a 18-55 IS is a great option...but the G10 covers more range and is smaller and easier for you to handle (However you sacrifice interchangeable lenses, a larger and better viewfinder, and the large image sensor and high ISO noise performance)

As for aperture, well you will lose low light capability, lose a bit of telephoto, and gain the wide angle getting the 18-55

I started (And many people starting in the 90s and early 00s) shooting a Nikon N75 with a 28-80 f/3.5-5.6 G which on film, was roughly the same as a 18-55...except I didnt have IS! I "grew" into a Nikon N70 with a 105mm f/2.8 macro and a 28-85 Sigma

In some situations, like indoors, it was hard, but you can always resort to using flash if you have to

Ahhh...sorry

Basically the 18-55 will be wider, but not as long as the 28-75 and it will not be as fast as it...

If you're a beginner, its a good starting point, start with it, take lots of pictures, see whats wrong, and get advice from people who will tell you if its you or your lens
