Hi, here are two photos i took in the weekend of my family dog, this was on a beach down the south coast of AUS. They were taken with a 5D with 24-70 L 2.8 lens. It looks as though his head is not quite in focus, probably the lag between the autofocus and the shutter release? or could it be motion blur at these settings?? The shot below is taken at F8 1/2000 ISO 500.

A second shot taken at f3.2 1/8000 ISO 400.

I am thinking the first image needs to be straightened, and i was also thinking there may be a way to sharpen the face somewhat, im only just starting to use CS3 though .

Any comments, help criticism would be greatly appreciated :)

The action in the first shot is great. Both images could benefit from a tighter crop. The focus is clearly the dog, so get rid of as much of the distracting background that you can. Make sure you crop so your dog is running into the frame.

You may also want to change the colour space to sRGB for posting on the web. Adobe RGB doesn't translate well to the web. I made no colour corrections, yet the colours are much nicer in the sRGB colour space.

Sample:

No PP other than the crop.

That #2 shot is wonderful! I like the angle and the entire scene.

Thanks for comments so far! I agree with you LeuceDeuce, the crop brings the dog much more into focus. Im still not sure about straightening, i may just try it and see how it looks.
rooeey, he is the craziest dog you have ever seen, all he ever wants to do is play with a stick or ball, and when youre not playing with him he harrasses you the whole time, hehe.

good shots, but try to fight the urge to center your subject all the time.

I love both of these. Both made me smile, but that first one made me laugh out loud. Cute pup.

I too am fighting the urge to center my subjects, but I find it is getting easier with time. I really like the crop that LeuceDeuce did though...

As previously stated, I like the crop, and just always try and keep that rule of thirds in the back of your mind. I really like the second one, the first one I feel like I am missing out on what he/she is running after. Thats just the first impression I get. Nice work though.

that first shot is just awesome. You have the angle spot on there. I think it would benefit from a crop though.

The 2nd one is also good but I find the stick in the foreground to distracting so I also think it would benefit from a crop.

good work.

boucher.

Just a different opinion, but I like the stick in the foreground, it tells a little bit of a story. I see it as he just dropped the stick at my feet backed up and shook the water off. Again just another opinion.

Thanks everyone, its great tto get some encouragement :)
AUgust15, that was exactly what was going through my mind when i took the photo, i actually have a couple of snaps without the stick, then i recomposed to include the stick just when he decided to shake of the water :). It does draw alot of attention though, and the crop does work quite nicely :)
