I have 50mm 1.8, pretty good lens, sharp.
Is IQ of 50mm 1.4 worth the extea outlay? Would appreciate feedback from anyone who has compared both.
BTW I use 5D and 350D.

I've had both, and found the 1.4 definitely worth the additional cash. Don't care for the build quality of the 1.8 and it was noisy (sound wise) in contrast to the 1.4.

Yes, it definitely is worth it.

i would look at it like this... how often is it on your body? before i got my sigma 30mm ( big thank you to don) i had my 50 1.8 on my body from july to december ( then with come cash flow i upgraded to the 1.4)

i wouldnt go back to the 1.8 for anything. it is quite a bit faster. the bokeh is a lot prettier than the 1.8, the DOF is razor thin. and the build quality is leaps and bounde better than the 1.8.

plus i dont feel like my mount is going to break all of the time. with the plastic one i always felt like it would break at any time.

happy reading.

To me, the extra 2/3 stop aperture advantage is worth it. I shoot exclusively in lousy light, so every little bit counts!

If you are getting pictures you like with the 50 1.8 I would keep it and spend the money on the sigma 30 or canon 85 1.8, whichever FL you think you would use more. If the 50 breaks you can revisit the question.

Bought it and think it was worth it for me.

Now thinking of getting a 35/.4L as well.

IQ is not where you're going to notice the difference most between these lenses. Build, AF, AF, and AF are.

It's worth it.

I've just done the same upgrade. As far as I can tell, I have been lucky enough to get a copy that is pretty darn sharp even wide open. It's a far nicer lens and I am delighted to have it in my bag.

I sold my 50 1.8 with its UV and CP filters on ebay for a decent price ( as I deserved considering all my gear is LNIB) which reduced the overall cost of upgrading to the 1.4

Is it worth it? I suppose it depends how much you use 50mm - I decided to upgrade because I am planning a portrait series and wanted the wider max aperture, the better AF and also, quite frankly, I just plain wanted it.

I've just bought the 100mm macro too, and the 85 1.8 is not too far away either. I'm going prime crazy, perhaps, but to be honest it's been a long dry spell lens-wise for me, I finally have a bit of spare cash, and to be honest , none of these lenses are L money, but they are all near L quality. You can't go wrong!

Agreed! While you will probably notice an increase in IQ in some situations, you will notice the much better build and AF in all situations!

Agree with Stan competely. I had the 50 1.4, but seldom used it. IMHO, the 85 1.8 is a much better choice.

It is a better choice if you have the room to use it (the 85mm that is). That's why I usually revert to my 85mm when I'm outdoors.
