I don't know if this will help you but....

All here (external link) (except outdoor ones) were taken with a Cloudsphere

And all here (external link) (including outdoor) were taken using Cloudsphere.

All with 420ex flash.

Direct or bounced?

Direct, the ceiling was too high or there just wasn't one in most of those shots.

The method (and discussion) is all detailed here. https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=369787

You aren't likely to find many comparative shots, same circumstances shot with both modifiers. So let's discuss the difference at the theory level...
Both function based upon the same general principle...a) direct a lot of light to ceiling and walls and use them as very large virtual light source to soften light and reduce hard edged shadows. b) direct some light forward to the subject to be captured as catchlight in the eyes. Now let's look at similarities and differences...

SIMILARITY
1. Both do A and B
2a. With flashhead straight up, both send light not only upward, but also
2b. scatter it radially in 360 arc around the flash.
3. With flashhead pointing forward, both send less light upward and more light forward, and much less light behind the flash.
4. Both are rather ineffective outside or when ceilings are too high, or when ceiling and walls are not a neutral color.
5. Both work reasonably well with household white ceilings.

DIFFERENCE
A. LightSphere is larger in apparent area than the Omnibounce
B. Affect of 'A' when used in '2' is inconsequential in terms of the light going upward. But the area of the units, in the size of the source for light which is sent forward, is that LS is considerably larger than Omnibounce. So any shadowing will be softer edged with LS than with Omnibounce.
C. Affect of 'A' when used in '3' is that the area of the units, in the size of the source for light which is sent forward, is that LS is considerably larger than Omnibounce. So any shadowing will be softer edged with LS than with Omnibounce.
D. The LS will be noticed to a greater degree than the OB by bystanders; this might or might not be desired.
E. The LS will fall off and roll farther, creating greater embarrassment for the photographer than if the OB were to fall off. (This has been reported by a number of POTN users of the LS.)

SUMMARY
The two products are similar in concept.
If you pay more (LS) you get better light softening even when ceiling is not present; cost is proportional to softening obtained.
Both waste light outdoors or where there are high/colored ceilings, which prolongs flash recycle time and consumes flash batteries at a more rapid rate than necessary; remove if not where there are household white ceilings.

I remember this old thread because I was considering an LSII at the time. Joel shows what it can do in the right hands and the right environment.

I want to shoot groups , families appr 15-18 feet away. I am trying not to use direct flash. I want f5.6-8 to make sure all are in focus. I have the LSII, Micro Apollo, and better bounce card. I will be shooting with Canon 40D and 24-70L 2.8 @ ISO 400 indoors, high ceilings. Any suggestions ? Thank you, rollsman
