ok, I have a question for you guys. I have a sigma 17-70 and this lens 18-55 IS. I don't know what to do, do I keep them or sell one of them, I feel like im covering the same with both but its so hard to get rid of one, I like them both. I only bought this one to see what canon did with the new kit lens, and boy was I surprised!

so do you guys think its a good idea to keep both? or do you guys think I should sell one of them to fund lets say an upgrade to my 50 1.8, or maybe something like a 85 1.8

the way I see it, with "IS" the canon is almost the same as the sigma minus the extra reach. I really don't know what do to, all i'm asking is some opinions to help me think outside the box.

You could sell both and get the Canon 17-55. If that's out of you budget.... you have to see wich one gets most use. I don't think I'd keep both though.

Sell the Sigma and get the EF-S 55-250 IS and see how that works.

wow, i never even knew that lens existed xarqi. I'll look into that one for sure. I was thinking of selling both and buying a 70-200 IS L i'll loose the widest apertures tho, I will have to look for a cheap wide.

The Tamron would be a natural progression from the Sigma but is obviously very close in Focal length range. Not sure I agree about the IS making the Canon almost the same as the Sigma, depends whether your subject is static or not.
However, I've been very impressed with what I've read about the Canon and very nearly chose it over the Tamron recently. I went for the Tamron for the constant 2.8 but the prospect of a sharp lens with IS at the price Canon are doing it for was very tempting. I haven't ruled out buying the Canon anyway as it seems so useful for the money.
But which to keep? All I can say is that the Sigma would be more expensive to replace in the event you got rid and then changed your mind. The flip side is that the CAnon may not raise as much cash if you sold it.
If I were you? Keep the Canon. Not horrifically slow by any means, at least as sharp as the Sigma according to some reviews, and the IS. The Sigma will raise some decent cash to put toward something else.

I think I'm going to keep the sigma, I've been thinking about it all day long today, its faster and has a little bit more reach, I know i'm not going to get a whole lot back selling the canon but, It will be a start to get my 85mm 1.8

I encourage people that are on a tight budget to take a really good look at the 18-55 IS it really is a great starter lens and for the price, it's going to be in the same league as the nifty when it comes to value for the money.
