I shoot weddings and normally use 30D's with 580EX flashes.
I borrowed a friends 580EXII to try and could not believe how noisey and whinney the flash zoom motor was.
Before I buy one I need to know if this is normal for the new model, as I think in a quiet church it would be VERY annoying.
Can anybody who might have both flashes confirm if the new model IS noisey or if my mate just got a bad one.

I haven't noticed a difference in the levels of the zoom motor noise between the two versions of the 580EX. But I'll check it when I get home tonight to confirm.

It's pretty quiet compared to a Sigma.

But the reality is, no matter where you use it, the FLASH from your flash will be potentially much more annoying than the zoom motor.

Mine is also very quiet.

It's a good day if I'm looking down at the grass and not up at the roots.

I just compared zoom motor sound of the 580EX to that of the 580EX II and the motor of the 580EX II definitely is louder and higher pitched. By comparison, the 580EX sound is soft and muffled.
