I have to tell you the story of my 100-400... I purchased the third 100-400 to come into my local camera store in January of 1999. (This lens was one of the reasons I chose Canon over Nikon in the first place.)

The thing worked great for a while and then the zoom and focusing jammed up hard as a rock. It wouldn't move at all. By this time it was out of warranty, but the salesman at the camera store wrote me a backdated receipt and I was able to get it repaired for free. When it came back, the repair ticket said the service center had replaced the entire lens barrel.

It was good for a while and then the same thing happened again. This time I had to fork over $400 to have it repaired. Again the lens barrel was replaced. The lens was now on its third serial number... About a year ago I started having a different problem with it. It wouldn't zoom all the way out to 400mm and wouldn't zoom all the way in to 100mm. It would sometimes hang up part way through the zoom range and I'd have to tilt it up or down to free it up.

When I finally decided it needed another trip to the doctor, I decided not to send it to Canon again. I instead took it to a local Canon authorized service center that was recommended by a friend (who had a tendency to drop her lenses). They replaced a "missing guide" (??? — the only way a guide could have been missing was if Canon had left it out at the second repair) and tightened up some screws in the lens... for $190.00. It has worked like a dream ever since, including the picture of the Heron.

I think the only reason I kept the thing this long was the fact I couldn't afford to replace it and I'm stubborn enough not to let it win...

John

Jim, I didn't see any canoes, hope some of these will suffice:

It would only be better if I was aboard them. :D

I mentioned a 21hour drive nonstop to key west the other day. On that trip we stopped on the way back in south Carolina and noticed an anole in the car. It was cold there so we took him home. He lived with us for a year and when we flew down the next year we smuggled him on the plane and took him home. We found a nice woodland where there were other anoles going up and down trees and let him go. We let him go on a log and he stopped, color corrected himself, and listened. he kept cocking his head and listening to what must have been familiar sound, it was hilarious. We sang "Born Free" and he scooted away. The anole story as told by Zane.

:) :)

I wanna come. Can you fit me in your suitcase??

Man, I sure hope nobody eats beans before we leave, it will be getting crowded in Cat's suitcase.

Another great 100-400 shot John,

I'll add another myself with the 100-400 on the 20D.

Not as nice of a shot, but it shows the tops of the same butterfly's wings.

Then Lisa grabbed the camera when the fellow started to get friendly with me.

Those are some seriously cool boats, Sarge.

Looks like you had a great trip!

It is always a very relaxing trip, no schedule, no worries. The anoles, boats, except the one from above, were all taken from the veranda.

Mornin Becky! Did Curt like his background? I really like mine, enough that I am contemplating the black/white one along with a darker brownish one.

Good morning Crissa, yes he did, but didn't play last night. We were wondering what model number you got?

Oh and your souvenirs, in celebration of your new 100, the first two were done with tubes and the 100 and my first attempt at refractions:

I LOVE my souvenirs!!! Thanks Becky.

I got #030 specifically for that "school picture" backgroundness to it. Getting their heads right in the middle of the bg wasn't easy or fun, next time I go way more generic!

That was one we had guessed. Glad you like your souvenirs.

How did your clients do with the formal shots? I know you take a lot of pictures, were any uneasy by the flash and formality?

I think the fact that it was me made a lot of difference in them being used to me and able to smile for me. I was going to reshoot 2 out of the 22 but those parents saw the shots and liked them! I'll try to post up a proof when I get to work.
