Sorry for the rant yesterday but at least it got some people thinking a little.

Gear Wars: A Really Underwhelming Plan

Wrong just wrong. What is this the "season finally". Just tell me your not going on strike. I can't handle another rerun of law and order. ;)

puddlepirate44 wrote in post #5144232 (external link)
I rarely post anything outside of these two chat threads. I'm not exactly sure why that is. I've never received a bashing from a thread that I've started. Sometimes, on those rare occasions when I do start a thread, I'll get three or four responses, and I figure that was about par for the course.

Perhaps it's a combination of things. I'm not all that confident about my shots, so I don't like posting them up for the unwashed masses to peruse. I guess I'm not as thick skinned as others. If I got an overwhelming response of "You should sell all your gear 'cuz you suck." then I probably would and just move on to the next hobby, whatever that would be.

Another aspect is that I don't really have much to say due to a lack of real experience. Many, many times I've gone to a thread, saw the shot, became the first poster on that thread by saying that I liked the shot, only to be followed by numerous other photogs saying that the shot was terrible, and here are fifty reasons why.... Well, OK, I'll just take my "I like the shot" comment and go to another sandbox....

Perhaps it's about trust. I trust the majority of those that post on these two threads to give me an honest answer. If someone like Cat, Wool, Zane or Crissa, for example, were to tell me that the shot was poor, I trust that they have my best interests at heart and would not just say such things for the sake of saying them. I can't say that I trust many people out in the general POTN public. I've seen too many people who will tear apart someone's perfectly good shot just to make themselves look big.

Then again, maybe it's a matter of knowing that those that are in these threads are patient with me and others who are learning the Photo Craft, as it were. I think back to where I was a couple of years ago when I first started playing with the Rebel XT. I've come along. Maybe not as fast as others, but not stagnant either. There are those that are willing to nudge me along, show me new tricks and to do so without saying things like, "RTFM" or "Don't waste my time!" or "Don't you know how to use the Search Tool?"

In my near worthless opinion, the RRTP and TPBM chat threads are a microcosm of what POTN should be as a whole. There may be other threads that have that same kind of reputation, but I've not been on them. It's hard enough to tackle these two. Because of the chemistry and the DNA of these two threads, I really don't have a need nor a desire to travel too far.

This is not to say that I shouldn't wander off the reservation. I should. And, to be honest, I do lurk and occasionally post. But mostly I just like to lounge here at "home".

Well said here Dan.

JWright wrote in post #5144479 (external link)
What really torques me, however, are the people who ask a question that makes it very apparant they have not taken one look at their camera's manual. Some of the questions are as inane as "How do I turn on my new 40D?"

Like Dan said (that I did not quote) those type questions are going to be asked and it may not be because people did not read their manual, it may be because they are like me and cant understand their manual. They may need plain English explainations. Trust me I ask dumb question and when I get the answers I know just how dumb they really are. But like Grandmother says not questions is dumb just the person not asking them.

I need one like that but for may kitties for their fake mousies. Pumpkin loooooves fetch. Sometimes she;kk throw her own mouse in the air and try to catch it. It's adorable.

Both of my cats do that a lot, too. It's funny. I'll be sitting here at the computer and every once in a while I'll see a mouse go flying through the air in my peripheral vision with a cat flying along right behind it.

:lol: like "where do I put the key?" or "how do I change a windshield wiper"? (those'd be my first questions :lol:)

Y'know, my car will be four years old in June and I still have never, not one single time, used the key to open the door or trunk! I love my keyless remote...

My Muffin did that too! Twink will beg me to play with him, and play fetch when I go get a toy, but Muffin would go pick her own toy out of the toy basket and romp around the house with it. Man, I still miss that cat. But I'm glad she's not hurting any more.

Depends on your perspective I guess, if you are really reading it upside down it is dropped, looking at it right side up it appears raised.
