monopod/tripod reversible screw ?

my new Induro monopod shipped with the mounting screw 3/8" thread exposed, instead of 1/4" which the user manual implies. after loosening and removing the locknut the mounting screw will not budge. is there a special 'trick' to loosening the mounting screw and reverse it so i can use the standard 1/4" thread? if not then it goes back tomorrow. thanks in advance.
