Hi,

Does anyone know how to add random noise/dots to a transparent layer in photoshop (CS3)? None of the filters seem to work in transparent layers. I am trying to create an action that will have these dots/noise on a layer. Then I can have a layer mask to paint these dots where I need them in the image.

Thanks.

You could make a new layer, blending mode overlay or soft light, and fill it with 50% gray. Then apply noise to that layer.

The filter needs some pixels to work with, a transparent layer doesn't have any. Try filling the layer with black, or 50% gray and see how that goes.

Thanks guys.

A week ago or so I saw this video tutorial where the instructor was using some action to create glitter. In the video the layer looked transparent with a lay mask. Then the instructor painted on the layer mask to make the glitter appear on the image on the layer below. Unfortunately, I do not remember the link to the video or the action name. (I didn't get to see the whole video either :-( ). Essentially, I am trying to make a glitter action.

The gray layer will work, but you won't be able to add noise with color using that approach.

Ultimately, the answer depends upon what you're trying to do.

And, you could create a custom brush in this case which might really help you with control.

If you post a large original, a bit of direction for outcome, perhaps people would post screenshots/technique for you.

Ah, posted while you posted.

The simple way is to flatten the image, duplicate the image layer, apply noise to the new layer, then put on a mask, fill all black, paint white w/brush opacity to taste where you want the effect.

You could do these techniques with custom brushes. Go into the brushes palette and have a play around with some of the settings.
