Here are the results from my test today with my cheap ebay 160w/s strobe and my Photgenic Studiomax II 320w/s strobe. Just shooting my calibration target with AWB and then using CS2 Raw Converter to get the actual WB.
Before and after temperature and tint values are displayed as well as camera settings I got using my Sekonic L-358 for metering each shot. Each time the power of the strobe was changed I dumped the stobe and let it recharge
before taking meter reading. If everything is acturate and my Photogenic is real power of 320 then the ebay strobes are only about 40w/s at full power since the camera settings match what the Photogenic had at 1/8 power.
The two composites attached are straight out of the camera only added the text to show which power was what and then combined them into the single composite.

Photogenic Stuidomax II 320W/s
1/32 power - AWB 5650 -8, Raw Converter Custom 5800 -13
Camera Settings 1/200, F7.1, ISO 100
1/16 power - AWB 5550 -7, Raw Converter Custom 5800 -13
Camera Settings 1/200, F9, ISO 100
1/8 power - AWB 5550 -7, Raw Converter Custom 5650 -13
Camera Settings 1/200, F14, ISO 100
1/4 power - AWB 5500 -7, Raw Converter Custom 5700 -13
Camera Settings 1/200, F25, ISO 100
Had to move the light back to 6 feet more for the next two shots because it was too much light. Because of that the AWB took more in and skewed the last too numbers. Take as what they are.
1/2 power - AWB 5200 -6, Raw Converter Custom 5600 -13
Camera Settings 1/200, F22, ISO 100
1/1 power - AWB 5250 -6, Raw Converter Custom 5600 -15
Camera Settings 1/200, F25, ISO 100

Why did you include numbers from the automatic white balance system in the camera? AWB, in my experience with my 20D, makes wrong "decisions" more often than it makes correct ones. In addition, the camera is not measuring the color of the light source, but reacting to the colors of the subject(s) that the light is bouncing off of - the reason for your statement about AWB changes after moving the lights.

The only thing that would make sense for the type of data you were trying to produce would be to use a calibrated colorimeter to actually measure the color temperature of the light source and ignoring the color characteristics of the subject material.

Please reconfigure your composite images to meet image posting rules. 1024 pixels wide max.

I think this test illustrates two things:
1) The cheap E-Bay strobes have a greater variance in color temp and tint across different power settings than the Photogenic strobes.
2) If you shoot a reference target and correct the color with a RAW converter, it doesn't matter.

I agree with Skip that the initial WB settings generated with AWB are irrelevant.

Thanks UEB for taking the time to set this up and do this test for me.
This was what I was wanting to see is if the cheap lights were in fact less consitent in color temp between the two lights and the power in f stop.
I just read it again and you did a white balance change in CS2 .
The f stop difference from on light to the other at the same power looks to be around 4 to 5 stops different until you get to 1/2 power or so then it if only 1 to 1 2/3 stop or so. So hard to tell this due to adjusting the powers and not getting it just right or the different brand 1/2 being different than the other.
Thanks again !
