I'll be interested in the answer, too. I've had similar results to yours (i.e. muddy looking colors).

Obviously it's a matter of techniuqe.

Here's the wiki  (external link)definition.

But the boys in the Craptacular Tonemapping Labs don't really subscribe to that. Basically, they drink lots of beer and play with the adjustments in Photomatix until the picture is purty. That's tonemapping.
