Jon, I might be needing a new bag soon. My lowepro minitrekker is almost full. I am going to need your help when the time comes.

funny, but I don't get the reference

It just seemed like something Jon would do if he had the chance to muck about with the Death Star.

this is what I'm talking about...this was one of my better shots (not processed) from today...but the wildflowers are tiny and the area is vast. How do I make it look better.

1. Were you using a CPL?
2. A narrower DOF, focusing on one specific subject, the rest in bokeh?

just checking in :) I went to pioneer town today...it was fun to photograph (there were NO tourists there...it was like a ghost town) and spent a little bit of time familiarizing myself with Joshua Tree NP. Fun day. My MIL took me to dinner at Applebee's. She was tired of dieting. YAY

Where did you go in the park?

I need some advice from those of you who've shot the desert...I'm failing in capturing the scope of the whole thing. I looked at my shots today and was thoroughly unimpressed...there are lots of wildflowers but unless I do a close up of the flower it looks like a boring landscape...I want to be able to capture the beauty of the flowers against the tough desert...in a landscape, not a close up. Got any suggestions?

The only thing I can think of is perhaps looking for a higher viewpoint to better capture the expanse of the flowers. That was one of the things we did when we went up there. We climbed up on the rocks to get that higher viewpoint.

Here's the link to my galleries and two of my friends that have shot up there. Perhaps you can get some ideas from there.

No, I forgot my cpl at the house...I'll take it for tomorrow. And I did a lot of narrow dof and those turned out really well but I wanted some way to show the glory of the whole thing....

John, we went up to something called Hidden Valley & Keys View. And I was wondering, I saw the Lost Horse Mine sign on the way up to Keys View. My MIL doesn't want me to go wandering there alone and so I said I'd ask if you'd been there, is it safe/easy to access and do you want to go again? (if so I'll wait for you and Heather and do it on Friday).

One thing that might help would be to shoot from a lower position so you're shooting right over the tops of the flowers.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

John, I'm going to look at your galleries in just a sec. Chief, I'll try that tomorrow. You're right...a different angle could do just what I'm wanting w/o blurring the distance.

Chief, I have some photos uploading for you and Wool right now...I found this little gem in the desert...it was on a "no trespassing" piece of land so I couldn't get close but still, I thought it was so cool, even far away.

saw this from the road to pioneer town

IMAGE: http://lcimages.zenfolio.com/img/v0/p660563078-4.jpg

I got as close to the "no trespassing" sign/barbed wire fence as possible to shoot these :)

this is a crop...it's hard to tell but it had such lovely detail on the outside...I wonder what it was like in the day. There are no tracks there...it was just on someone's property...got burned in the big fire recently.

plus it's very hazy here...don't know how to compensate for that...

Permie...ever see Arizona Highways magazine? The have to be neck and neck with Nat Geo for the best photos running...one the tricks they often use is to get right down at flower level and shoot up a bit at the surroundings...Rolling in the desert might not sound like fun...but you never know!;)
