Seems it is usually used as a wet polishing agent...most commonly lubricated with kerosene. Too fine to have an actual grit number, the rating is presumed to be in the 800-1600 range with most brands coming in around 1200 grit.

my dad is 56 he calls it crocus cloth in fact i used some not to long ago to polish a paintball part it seemed alot less scratchy than sandpaper
