My parents have a dozen or so hummer feeders at their cabin. It isn't unusual to see 50 or more hummers at a time in the area...but I have never seen one land. Common sense tells you that they land all the time...they build nests and have babies. I just have never had the good fortune or the opportunity to see it.

Thanks.

When I was in Costa Rica in 1995 we stayed at a B&B that was right on the edge of the rainforest. There were several feeders set up on the hotel patio. We'd sit there with a beer and watch the hummers fight for the feeders. There were four or five different species ranging from tiny to almost four inches tall. We'd be sitting there and the birds would be using us as cover to escape from or attack the other birds. It was a trip to have two or three hummers hovering around your head.

They had to cover the feeders at night because the nectar bats would come out of the jungle and they could empty a feeder in less than a minute. I tried shooting the bats and out of 17 shots, I got 7 with bats in them and 10 pictures of just the feeder (they left one uncovered for the bats).

Fun day today w/only a few mishaps...

First, my camera and the Chief's tripod almost ended up permanent residents of the desert...a gust of wind very nearly took them both off the cliff!

Second, I hiked around too long in the heat w/o enough water...bad move. unghhhh!

But I saw quail, a coyote, several types of lizards...it was great. No snakes though. And I really looked for them too.

Hey, Dan.

We're up early, too. Today is a travel day to the Bay Area. We try to get through L.A. before the worst of the rush hour, so we're up at 4:00 and on the road by 5:00.

Looks like Lisa had a good time yesterday. I'm enjoying her perspective of the desert. It's interesting to see it through someone else's fresh eyes. It's all new to her, and really old stuff for me.

Talk to you all tonight.

Drive safe, Chief.

If the Oregonian crew goes there, I may try to arrange something... But I have to say that Switzerland is much nicer :p

I'll go to Switzerland in a heartbeat if I could.

I have a question about this lightroom 2 beta. Is it a free upgrade? Is it finished?

It isn't an upgrade, it is a beta, which means it isn't a finished product yet... and will install along side 1.x. It is really for testing purposes only because there still could be bugs.

It is free atm, but when they release 2.0 there will be a charge. When you read beta.. think rough draft.
