OK here are my shots. This is the first time the band has played on stage and not in a dark bar or for charity/pro bono stuff. I'm not overly happy with the sigma since it seemed to be front focusing in a lot of the images. I'm going to have to find another lens I think. Please CC with suggestions. This is my first time shooting in this kind of light.

If you're interested here is the band's site. I've taken all the photos on it. http://www.bluecoyoterocks.com/ (external link)

Fantastic job! These turned out really, really well! Great timing and good composition, you really get a feel for the band in these images. 2, 4, 6 and 13 are my favourites.

Well the sigma was front focusing by about 4-5 feet and the only other lens I had with me was the 100 macro. Not the best choice for a dark venue, but was all I had. I had the 200 prime with me but it was too long because they closed off the balcony.

I'm trying to find a good cheap lens to use for future gigs because the 30 just isn't cutting it. I love the focal length though. I've tried the 35 2.0 but it wasn't accurate enough in low light. I may try another sigma, we'll see.

If 1.8 is fast enough for you, give the 28 1.8 a try. I had it for awhile and it has great AF (Ring USM)...mine wasn't super sharp wide open...but I'll take in focus over super sharp any day. I only replaced it when I went crazy and bought the 35L. ;)

Drew that's the one I'm looking at right now. Looking, a lot of these wider shots were not at 1.4, so I think 1.8 would be fine. I wish I had more need for the 85 1.8 as well, but in other areas that I shoot in I don't need it. Until they really start playing more I can't spend too much since it'll only be used for their gigs. I was thinking of using the 24 2.8 (since I can use it for landscapes,) but I worry it won't be fast enough, but then again the 100 did fine at 2.8

assuming it's a sigma 30 f/1.4, why not just send it in for calibration? when it's working properly, it's a dynamite lens.
