Well I do know that the coatings on the Hoya Digital Pro 1 work really well controlling flare. I've processed hundreds of photos using the filter which I've consider the clarity and sharpness results to be very good.

I've been tempted many times to order the B+W equivalent but in the F Pro that has front threads just the verify the IQ first hand. After that conclusion one of the other would go up for sale.

Anybody wanna loan we their B+W CPL for testing? I'll gladly pay the shipping both ways _ :-)

I've seen B+W F Pro (not slim) owners claim this filter won't vignette on the Canon EF-S 10-22mm at 10mm but haven't seen any results.

I have B+W filter with no vignette @10mm on 10-22 or @16mm on 16-35L [Full Frame body].

I have B+W filter ( have B+W 77mm Kasem... the most expensive one) with no vignette @10mm on 10-22 or @16mm on 16-35L [Full Frame body].

I'm more interested as to the standard B+W F-Pro MRC vignetting.

Well, I got a response to my question about the reduction in light transmission in the Digital versions of the Hoya/Kenko filters. The question was whether the reduction in light transmission in the Pro 1 Digital filters was a design limitation or purposeful design. Here is the response I got back from the Hoya Tech Service Rep:

"Honestly I belive it would be a design limitation, but that is something Japan has never fully clarified."

Now the question is whether this light transmission reduction is a significant difference to affect IQ? Also, a question could be asked if the multicoating difference in the Pro 1 SHMC filters have any negative affects ont the digital sensors?

Any optical engineers out there with any comments?

I am finding it difficult to belive this. As I said earlier 98% is about the same as a HMC coating. This is quite a big difference in reflectance relative to incidence level, -5.6 stops compared to -8.4 stops, about 2.8 stops worse. A big difference on paper.

Checking my lenses I find I have a mixture of SHMC Pro 1 and Pro 1 digital, I have a 10-22mm with a Pro 1 and a 17-40 with a pro 1 digital, looking at the flare test I have to hand:

10-22 @ 17mm f4
No Filter

SHMC Pro 1 UV(O)

17-40 @ 17mm f4
No Filter

Pro 1 Digital UV(O)

So not a direct comparison but the overall impression is there is not a huge visible difference.

One wonders why Hoya have made this change, could it be the old filters were not as good as claimed?

I note that Hoya's distributers website THK Photo are still quoting:

"In 1996 Hoya introduced the line of Super Multi-coated filters. Consisting of a Skylight, 1B, UV (0), ND 2X, ND4X, and a low profile circular polarizer, this line of filters has a 5+1 layering system on each side of the glass: 5 layers of anti-reflective coating and a transparent easy-clean top coat. This reduces light reflections off the filter surface to an average of just 0.3%. This is the lowest reflective rate on the market, from any filter manufacturer."

But as I said earlier SHMC, SHMC Pro 1 and Pro 1 Digital seem to be marketed interchangably at the retail outlet.

Well I just received my Hoya Pro1 SHMC and to my surprise it's not the digital version (I could have sworn I did order the digital). After going back to HVStar and checking my order, it appears as though I didn't order the DMC version after all. But after reading this thread it appears as though I picked up the right one. Also, going back to HVStar's site, I see they do not carry the digital version. Don't know if they ever carried it...

The Pro 1 Digital 77mm CPL is their #1 seller. I got one last week.

I was referring to the plain UV(0) one. I'm familiar with their pro1 DMC CPL... I have it too... :D

1/4" total thickness. 3/16" not including the threads that screw into the camera. I don't know if it would be possible to get it any thinner and still have the outer threads.
