They vary. They contain no optics, so image quality is not affected in any different way for a given lens by choice of extension tube. What does differ is build quality and whether the electrical contacts are passed to the lens, permitting AF and auto-aperture. Ones without these contacts are cheaper, but not worth the effort of having to do everything manually.

You may well find that manual focussing is preferable in macro, but you want your lens aperture controlled by the camera.

Kenko makes decent ones that work correctly with EF lenses. I don't think they work with EF-S lenses.

Get the Kenko, they are cheap about $100 for the set on ebay.
The work perfectly with autofocus and camera exposure. Below it said they do not work with EF-s but I would do some more research.

The new Kenko tubes DO work with ef-s lens'. Also the old set will work with a little DIY mod. If you goggle it you should be able to find out how.

I have a set and love them. I don't shoot enough macro to justify a true macro, so the tubes come in handy when I want something closer/more frame filling.

I love my Kenko's despite the fact that they're just round hollow metal containers...

Mine work with my EF-S kit lens. Not that I would use the kit lens when I have the 100 2.8 macro but I just tried just to know.
