Soon I shall be backpacking around Europe for about 3 months.

I plan to buy a used 350D to take with me, as it is light, and I won't be to devistated if it gets lost/stolen/damaged. (trusty 40D can stay at home, safe)

The question is... which lens should I purchase (used or new) to take with me!?

The lens needs to be

  • Inexpensive
  • Not too heavy
  • And good for touristy of Western Europe and the Mediteranean (versitile).

Anyone have any ideas / suggestions?

beyond the kit lens etc, look at the 28-105 f/3.5-4.5. it's only around $240, very lightweight, and it doesn't look like it's worth lots of money, either. Very versatile and good IQ imo. Are you taking the flash? If not, I'd bring nifty as well.

I'm soon going backpacking around europe, too. I'm going to be taking my 24-70, a sigma 8mm fish, 2 flashes and the st-e2 (with my gripped 350D). I'll put up with carrying the gear to be able to take the shots I want.

If backpacking is first and photography second, I can see why you would choose not to bring the whole set of gear. Makes perfect sense. If it were me, I'd take a Sigma 17-70 as this would provide a good focal range and still retain good quality... 'tho any 17-X would work well too.

Likely going to get flamed for this suggestion, but if truly light travel is desired and photography really is a secondary 'sport' on this trip, perhaps a G9 would suffice. I'm cringing now waiting/expecting some fall out. :-)

Another vote for the Sigma 18-200, I think it's a great travel lens.
