Baadil - First, my own beginner mistake was not making sure that I still had black and white on their respective ends. Makes a big difference. Also remember that the gradient map is mapping only against your luminosity, and as such you have two ways of 'popping' the resulting image. Within the gradient map itself you can adjust where each color value will 'appear' and fade into the next. Or you can use a curves adjustment layer between your original image and the gradient map. Want to get really fancy? Use a B+W adjustment layer to control which colors will appear light and which dark in the gradient. Lots of possibilities, but as I said in the first, I'm sure there's an 'elegant' way of doing this as well.
