Great site I found here, been reading allot of posts and picking up lots of tips.
I just got back into serious picture taking. I used to shoot allot with a 35 but then went to a point and shoot and now I'm back at it with an XTI, the kit lens, and a 100-400 IS.

I noticed some low light shots coming out a little underexposed then proceeded to read all about that here. I then compared my Fuji p&s to it for comparison. What I noticed, other than the exposure differences, is that the color of my p&s is much nicer than the XTI using the 18-55.

P&S is a Fuji S5000 10X zoom

I know that these are not great shots for color comparison but it's still aweful brown around here.

Fuji 1/80 F-3.2 auto mode
seems overexposed but the green colors look good

If you want the Xti to perform more like a p&s, try boosting the in-camera contrast. P&S cameras do a lot of in camera processing.

Your loosing some of you dynamic range by over exposing. Correcting you exposure will improve the shot right off.

Also, P/S cameras apply a lot of sharpening, contrast enhancement, and saturation. A SLR tones those down allowing the user to make the adjustments. If you want to reproduce the P/S look, bump the sharpness one or two ticks, and boost the sat and contrast.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

also try raising the aperture a bit...remember P&S camera have smaller aperture per number...

Meaning that even though it says F3.2 , in SLR terms its like F11 or higher.

The XTi did this the best actually. Evaluative metering? You can see that portions in the background for this image and the foreground aren't overly blown out like the others.

The look you wanted to go for might've been helped by partial/center weighted metering with boosted saturation.

That's one thing I could never understand about my Fuji P&S. It has a focal length equiv to a 35mm of 37-370 mm and an aperture of F2.8 to F8 I could never understand how they came up with that aperture ?

How much post-processing are you doing on the XTi shots? And are you shooting in JPEG or RAW? And which photo editor are you using for post-processing?

I just got my XTi 3 months ago and thought my P&S (Olympus C-750) was taking better pictures because of the sharpness of the pictures. But after getting to know the XTi better, understanding exposure better, learning how to post-process better and shooting in RAW I now feel the XTi pictures put the C-750 shots to shame...the colors are much richer and the details in the photo are clearer. And after examining the C-750 pictures more closely I noticed a fair amount of noise in them and hardly any noise in the XTi pictures.

I used auto just for comparison sake. I also did not do any post processing for comparison as well. I usually adjust them a little in either Photo Pro or in my fuji program. I have a trial version of Elements downloaded but haven't taken the time to learn that one. I'm shooting in JPEG right now because of the simplicity but I realize that I will need to move to RAW at some point. A very time consuming hobby it is.
